Thanks Original: I looked to quickly and read the box scores incorrectly. Looks like the On Deck 16 O's faired very well at the WWBA Jr. Championship games 3-3 just like the older 18U On Deck O's did the week before 3-3 in the WWBA Sr. Champsionship games!

Congratulations On Deck 16 O's on a fine showing @ East Cobb last week at the WWBA Jr. Championship Games!!!

I'm happy that you got to experience a Perfect Games tournament, Original. Your son received an opportunity to play against some of the best HS players in America....and gave all the players a sense of where they (stand) in regards to the competition.

They are all well run, well participated tournaments that your son will gain from.

Glad that you had a great time.

PS-- Due to Braves' vacation from the Forum due to Football...he told me to send his regards to both you and SouthLoop and to " stop posting smilie kisses to NCBaseballfan"...he said, " this is a baseball forum, not a chatroom...sheesh"...those were his quotes ...not mine.

Some final notes on the tournament and the 16U O's performance:

The O's came out of pool play 3-2 and were the 13th seed in medal play. They lost 3-1 to the 4th seed and eventual 2nd place finisher, Nor Cal '04s, a team made up of rising senior all-stars from various parts of Northern California, including the San Francisco-Oakland area and Sacramento.

The O's have played both the champion East Cobb Braves and the second place finisher, Nor Cal '04s, this summer. They lost to the East Cobb Braves 3-2 in the Astros Classic earlier (a great pitching performance by Brendan Van Popering (Charlotte Catholic '05)) and 3-1 to the Nor Cal 04's (another fine pitching performance -- this one by Cody Drake (Myers Park '05)). In both games a couple of timely miscues was the only difference.

The O's pitching overall was great last week. Alex Martin (Providence '04), Ben Buchanon (East Meck '04) (both Alex and Ben were borrowed from the older O's), Van Popering (Cathoic '05), Matt Layman (South Meck ('06) and Drake (Myers Park '05) all had quality outings. Antonio Cousart (Myers Park '05) was the only O's starter who struggled -- he had trouble spotting his fastball and his velocity was down in the 82-84 range. Van Popering's 3-hit, 1-run complete game against the powerful East Cobb A's 17s and Drake's 6-hit, 1 earned run complete game against the tournament runners-up were especially noteworthy. Although they both topped out at 80-81, they proved once again that spotting the ball effectively is more important than velocity.

Leading the O's offense for the week were Jonathon Ratledge (Country Day '05), who has been tearing it up all summer, Wes Borden (South Meck '05), Greg Miclat (Robnson '05), and Martin Hovis (Gastonia Forestview '05). Kyle Josey (Butler '05), Jeremy Mathis (Myers Park '05), Daniel Hill (Charlotte Christian '05), Daniel Foster (South Meck '05) and Thomas Hovis (Olympic '05)also contributed key hits from time to time during the week.

The East Cobb folks, who were roundly criticized on this and other boards recently, did a high-quality job as hosts of this tournament. Yes, the Perfect Game folks ran the tournament, but the field preparation, communication and concessions were all handled locally and many East Cobb volunteers put in long days all week. And this after hosting the senior WWBA championship the week before. They deserve to be congratulated for their fine efforts this time.

And if there is a finer facility for amateur baseball in this country, I'd sure like to see it. It is easy to see why so many players decide to spend their summers in Marietta and how they field so many quality teams there -- 10 of the 40 teams in the field were East Cobb teams and 7 of the 16 championship-round qualifiers were from East Cobb.

The umpiring was very good all week. What was most striking about this tournament was that there was very, very little complaining and bickering about calls and excellent sportsmanship shown throughout the tournament. Perhaps a sprinkling of college coaches and scouts is all it takes to make folks behave.

No...it was because Perfect Game was in charge of the operations and the selection of umpires....although there are many great volunteers in the ECB program, don't believe for a minute that the ( Boys in Charge) of the East Cobb Complex had anything to do with the handling of this tournament...other than ensuring field playability and concessions. This was a Perfect Games Tournament....not to be confused with the East Cobb Complex.
