Dirtbags beat Hammertime Performance 17U in the bottom of the 7th on suicide squeeze to advance to finals

 

Maybe I'm missing something, but last time I looked, a perfect game isn't the box score that I'm reading?

Perfect Game is an organization that promotes INVITATION only baseball tournaments throughout the country during the summer and fall months with the "grandaddy" of them all in October in Jupiter Fla. Hundreds of scouts attend these events both college and pro. I had the pleasure of going to Jupiter last year and it was quite an experience I will never forget. Teams that invited are the best showcase teams around the country.

 

These are pictures of just one game. There were 16 other games going on at the same time. There were over 500+ scouts attending

they all wear flowered shirts and carry a hardcase for their little radar guns. you can see them a mile away. the phillies scout always has a floppy fishin hat on. they are quite a crew.

 

Dirtbags finish second in WWBA

Dirtbags had a great run and should be very proud of how they represented North Carolina. There were many comments made about the outstanding talent we have in the state.

Forced to share the 2005 WWBA 17U National title with NorCal after rain washed out the championship game, All American Prospects took the 2006 title outright with a 6-2 win over Dirtbags Sunday afternoon at the East Cobb Complex in Marietta, Georgia.

With the exception of one game, a deep and talented pitching staff carried All American to a 9-0-1 record during the week long tournament. They only allowed 4 runs during pool play and added a couple of shutouts during the playoffs. During that one game that the pitching staff didn't perform, the offense picked them up in a 11-10 semifinal win over Striker Baseball.

Dirtbags had perhaps the strongest team fundamentally at the event, with a very sound defensive team and solid pitchers who threw strikes. They finished the event with a 9-1 record. Their semifinal win over Hammertime Performance was a typical Dirtbag victory, 2-1, with the two runs scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a squeeze in the bottom of the 7th.

The key to the final game was that the All American pitching staff was a bit deeper than the Dirtbags. All American led 1-0 going into the 6th inning with RHP Brian Warren cruising on the mound. Dirtbags were on their 4th pitcher of the game at that point, as starter Greg Holt left after 3 innings because of pitching 5 innings on Thursday.

After All American scored once in the top of the 6th, the Dirtbags tied it up in the bottom of the 6th, with OF L.J. Hoes singling in the first run, then scoring the second on a daring steal of home. All American came back to score 4 runs in the top of the 6th, though, with 3B Rolando Gomez, OF Jeff Eubanks and 1B Danny Rams singling in runs.

Warren went 6 innings, allowing only 2 hits, to get the championship game win. Rams was 3-4 with 2 doubles, while Gomez was 2-4.

Gomez, a 2008 prospect who normally plays in the middle infield, was named the Most Valuable Player of the event. He drove in runs in all 5 playoff games, including the winning run in two of the games. Hammertime Performance LHP Craig Gullickson, son of former ML'er Bill Gullickson, was named Most Valuable Pitcher after allowing no earned runs in two wins against playoff teams for the surprising Hammertime club.

The Dirt Bags coached by Andy Partain and Chris Manes, came in 2nd place in the country in the world wood bat tournament. The Game was tied going into the 7th inning, however, the DirtBags gave up 4 runs to lose 6-2. 115 teams were in the tournament. East Cobb Astros and East Cobb Braves both were defeated in the semi finals. The DirtBAgs were 9-0 up until the final game. They came out of pool play as the number 2 seed. Tyler Hanover, Quincy Latimore, Garrisson Lassiter, C.J,. Beaty,L.J.Hoes, David Mailman, Greg Holt , Jason Wallace, Cody Stanly, starred in the series. Pitching stars were Patrick Johnson, Trent Rothlin, Ryan Leach, ? Povey, Holt, Mailman, Hasselbrock, and Seth Simmons. With teams from all over the country, the boys from North Carolina showed the nation what kind of talent is here in the state.

 

Andy and the Dirtbags continue to impress on a national level. They finished third overall at the WWBA World Series this past fall in Jupiter, FL. North Carolina players are finally getting the attention they deserve. It will only continue with the class of 07 that boasts several nationally ranked players.

I predict Wallace is going to have an all state season next year.
