November 15, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University head men’s basketball coach Houston Fancher has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2008-09 season. Joining the Mountaineers on the hardwood next season will be Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn./Oak Ridge), Petey Hausley (Marion, N.C./McDowell), Josh Hunter (Albany, Ga./Okaloosa-Walton C.C.), and Andre Williamson (Prince George, Va./Prince George)

All four incoming student-athletes are forwards and will be counted on to replace the void left by this season’s five graduating frontcourt players.

“I’m really excited about our incoming class,” said Fancher. “Our staff did an excellent job of pinpointing athletic forwards. All of them come from winning programs and are very well coached. They are all excellent rebounders and proven scorers. Furthermore, all four come from terrific homes and backgrounds and will only strengthen the character of our team.”

Quinche Dowdell (pronounced QUIN-SHAY) is a 6-5, 205-pound forward that averaged 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for Oak Ridge High School last season to lead his squad to a 25-9 record. He has already amassed more than 1,500 points and 500 rebounds in his scholastic career. Fancher says Dowdell possesses a great body and is expected to be very productive in making the transition from power to small forward. A Street and Smiths Preseason All-American, he can also finish around the basket with both hands. Dowdell hails from the same high school as Appalachian associate head coach and former Mountaineer standout Matt McMahon.

Petey Hausley will come to Appalachian from nearby Marion, N.C. where he led McDowell High School to a 24-7 record last season and was named the Northwest 4A Player of the Year. A 64-percent shooter from the floor, the 6-6, 230-pound forward averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per outing. Fancher describes him as an extremely athletic player that has gotten much stronger and is a relentless rebounder that finishes well around the goal.

Josh Hunter is the lone junior college player in the recruiting class, coming from Okaloosa-Walton Community College. A 6-6, 230-pound forward, he led the Panhandle Conference in rebounding last season with nearly 10 boards per game and was the conference’s third-leading scorer at 10.6 points per game to lead the Warriors to a 23-5 record. This season he is averaging 18 points and 12 boards per outing. He is a very versatile forward that is a natural leader who can shoot from the perimeter, but makes his living on the block. Prior to the start of the season, the Sporting News named him to the junior college All-America third team.

Andre Williamson hails from Prince George, Va. where he averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds for Prince George High School his junior season. A 6-7, 210-pound forward, he also averaged three blocks per outing. According to Fancher, Williamson is an excellent athlete with great timing as a rebounder and shot blocker who reminds him of a left-handed Jeremy Clayton.

Way to go, Petey....Maybe Buggy can join you at ASU as a football player!
