.....say a kid throws a bit inside, no malice, and the batter turns into the pitch and gets hit on the wrist etc.
    C'mon, we've all seen it.

Whats the low down on how an ump calls this gig?

Is it a foul ball or is it a HBP and the batter goes to first and why?

I think it is all umpire preference. I have seen girls get hit where it was obvious she turned in and was awarded 1B. I have also seen where a pitcher will throw a change up inside and a 12U could get out of the way, stand there and get 1B. I think it is a new technique that batters are being taught and the umps will have to watch more closely for this.

Well, it's not a foul ball. But there are different ways it could be called.

    1) Ball is clearly not in the strike zone and umpire may decide that the "turn in" was not an attempt to get out of the way (or worse, an attempt to get in the way). Dead ball, ball. Did anybody see the player stick the knee in the way during the WCWS?

    2) Umpire judges that ball is in the strike zone at contact or batter prevented the ball from entering the strike zone with the move and contact. Dead ball, strike.

    3) Umpire judges that turn was attempt to swing at the ball. Dead ball, strike.

    4) Ball is clearly not in the strike zone, umpire decides that the "turn in" was a reaction to get out of the way. Dead ball, HBP.

IMHO, it depends on the quality of your umpire whether or not you'll get anything other than 4.

There is a rule (or three). However, umpire must judge (1) whether the ball was in the strike zone and (2) whether the batter made an attempt to get out of the way. Just like calling balls/strikes, fair/foul, safe/out, the umpire sees what he sees and rules accordingly.

I don't know why some umpires seem to have trouble seeing that the contact was over the plate, or that the batter was standing stock still waiting for the ball to roll into their foot.

im with marlin - the good umps take into account wether batter moved or not and what the pitch would have been no swing and not hit batter.

hit on the wrist? did it hit the bat knob first? could be foul ball.

unfortunately EVERY rule still comes down to wether the ump
    a) KNOWS the rule, and B) ENFORCES the rule
    and thats for ALL rules.

at state tourny - umps told photogs that if we are hit even in the marked off zone its a dead ball and they decide what to do from there. if the ball comes our way and we get out of the way and dont interfere, balls live as if the box didnt exist.

regular season game - ump said that box if drawn is dead wether it hits us or not

When the ball hits the batter, no matter where she is, it is a dead ball. Ball doesn't hit the batter, it's a live ball, even if it rolls all the way from the pitcher's circle.

Are you saying that he's going to send the batter to first if the ball enters the batter's box? Please tell me I've misunderstood.
