cool thought about an award for the positions. the state games would be a cool venue to do what you talk about: but, you still dont get the best players to tryout or make the teams. (lots of politics here as well).

....easy there Dawg, I promise you that the better hitters workout every bit as much if not more than the 30 min pitching lessons of a pitcher in the off season.
As for wins and losses credited to the pitcher, its just another stat to be considered with all the rest.
Scenario, bottom of the 7th, score tied 0-0, bunt back to the pitcher, she hail marys the throw into rightfield and the batter goes to 2nd. E-1, ok now that runner scores in some fashion and in the books the winning run will be unearned.
The point is that her stats don't reflect negatively on the very play involving her other than the loss and that was her fault.
So when you, me, anybody really looks at stats we have to make real sense of all of them.
ERA, runs scored against, heres one that kills me.....stolen bases credited to the pitcher, huh?

Nevermind the 3 $300 bats, batting lessons, tees, dropball machines, helmets, batting gloves and the cost of tokens for the bater to be in the cage.

    good point...

...would the other 5 teams have won 5 titles with your daughter hitting for them? ...or would the other teams have won 5 titles with the pitchers for your daughters teams pitching for them?

watched the alabama/florida contest this weekend in tusculoosa. jessica mendoza was a broadcaster. was interesting because jessica (a hitter) was in favor of the pitchers mound being moved back and all the runs that were being scored because of it but that her good friend michelle smith (a pitcher) was not in favor of the move. wonder why?

....so I see that you highlighted the part about a batter, ave., HRs, being different in different conferences, nailed it......and so would the pitchers stats as well.

    Cheese is right

Cheese is right it takes 9 but here my two cents worth on pitchers:

As Ray says the good ones work year round five to seven days a week.
They perfect their skills by taking hours of lessen and then putting what they learn to work.
A pitcher and a catcher are the only two players that are involved in every pitch, ball or strike
The pitcher is charged with every hit, every walk, every error (goes against her record if she loses)
She can be the goat or hero with one pitch
With good stuff and control, the pitcher can control a game but a .500 won/loss record is below average while a .300 hitter is a great player!
A team of .300 hitters can not win unless their pitcher can hold down the opponent and force them to hit pitches that create ground balls, K's, and fly balls that can be caught.
A hitter with speed has many methods to get on base, however a pitcher with great control and several pitches can make it more difficult for that hitter to use her speed, now a great defense on top of those skills can all but
    eliminate that speed.
The best HR hitters hit one every 20 at bats and a .300 hitter gets 6 hits, what if a pitcher threw 30% strikes?
Softball is a team sport as Cheese has stated, it takes 9 players all committed to one goal, WIN! The teams that win consistently, have good chemistry, believe in a system, believe in team environment, respect all their teammates (notice did not say like or love), do not care who gets:N1oldschool: all the accolades and are never satisfied with their performance and want to continue to learn and improve.
My daughter is not and was not a pitcher and she never begrudged a teammate for getting accolades nor wanted me to brag of her accomplishments, she always got her rewards from her teammates embracing her. She truly taught me a lesson or two!
Last comment, all truly successful softball and baseball programs have great pitching, simple as that! No one position can make more of an impact, look at the past six softball world series, didn't all the champions have a "stud" pitcher? When you get such evenly matched teams, all with great position players and hitters, what separates them, PITCHING!:N1oldschool:

Marlin The pitchers I know have one hour lessons every week and throw on their own three times a week. I truly do not know or even remember hearing of any hitter that follows a regiment like that All winter. If there are some (Im sure) that they are great hitters no matter the position the more you put in the more you get out.

You are right, that would be true as well for pitching stats.
