I've been trying to determine the various sanctioning bodies rules regarding the pitching lane. This is the 24" wide lane you see chalked in NCAA games from each side of the pitching plate towards home plate.

The NCAA rule is that a pitcher's foot must not land outside that chalked line. The area I'm struggling to find clarification on the ASA and NFHS rulings regarding the pitching lane. Can someone help clarify the rules for me? Thanks!

Yep, I found this googling and I didn't find the answer to be clear. What I think the answer is from all I looked at is that both ASA and NFHS have pitching lane rules but that don't have rules regarding the lining of the pitching lane. I'm looking for clarification of the specific rules.

    Thanks

Rules don't work unless they are enforced properly and with consistency.

The pitching lane is #2 in Foobar calls right behind #1.....the pitcher replanting.

    Luv it!

They should get rid of the "pitching lane rule." Does baseball have one?

its a rule that should be heavily enforced. my dd is a pitcher, and when she wants that curve or screw to swing, she cheats like the dickens to get more on it. i've watched he step a foot outside of that rubber for a good curve. she's not the only one doing it...plus she's 23 anyway, but the farther out you get, the more swing....

The current status of the 24" pitching lane, as I understand it:

NCAA is the only one who currently mandates the lines be drawn on the field. The lines are in front of the plate, such that the outside edge of the lines matches the outside edge of the pitcher's plate. See http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/rules/softball/Pitchers_Lane_Diagram_9_10.pdf

In all codes that I'm aware of, if the pitcher's foot lands completely outside of the lane (defined as the 24" wide path directly in front of the pitcher's plate) then it is an illegal pitch. In the case of the NCAA drawn lines, then yes, the foot would have to be completely off the line.

I have seen one ASA tournament where the lanes were actually drawn on the field. I'm not sure why it was done. It was during, or just after, the WCWS, which may have had something to do with it.
