Playing in the moment....

Are we looking too far ahead for the young gentlemen playing today's game? Is today's game important or are we looking forward to something that is not guaranteed?

I understand dreams of parents and players but without creating good habits in the moment, how can we expect for the kids to play the right way in tomorrow's game or even the game 3 years down the road?

There are a select few gamers that come out everyday that you know really care about winning. It's an approach that the kid doesn't even have to think about. This approach is stamped on the kid growing up. Its an approach that says "you are not going to beat me.....today, tomorrow, next year or even in 10 years".

So the question goes........How do we as a community breed players that play in the moment? The player that plays for his team and not himself and wills his team to wins. Its an intangible characteristic/tool but it has to be learned somewhere. Where did that player learn it?

One last thing.......obviously there is no scientific evidence but if the kid's mom is tough and he has a little athletic ability, most likely the kid is going to be a gamer!

Biggest problem with the game today - everybody playing for "the next level".
I deal with 12-13 year olds who are talking abouit "scholarship" and how they will "project".
Absolutely ridiculous.
Consumed with personal stats - always looking for the "bomb" - when a dribbler to 2B will drive in the go-ahead run.

Other problems, not necessarily in order:
Total lack of respect for umpires - players, coaches, fans.
Very little respect for coaches - unless believed to be able to get player to that "next level."
Too many teams/games to play with/in - lose one day, throw on jersey for next team the next day. (Back to the in the moment argument...)
Umpires who just want to get the game finished and get paid.

 

Lack of Respect

Agreed......respect is the key word. If the player doesn't succeed, it doesn't have anything to do with the player, it is somebody elses fault....the umpire, the coach, the field, etc.

The car ride home from the field is so important. Probably one of the biggest teaching moments a parent can have with their kid. As a coach, you never talk about other players or playing time.....you talk about what the player can do to improve his/her game and what needs to happen for them to break the lineup. If parents would take this approach it would put a lot more accountability on the player and take away the excuses. Some parents take that approach and those are the kids that play the game the right way and have the ability to make adjustments.

 

too many games

heard a parent talking about it's just too much ball. The son plays 3 nights a week with his HS summer team then on weekends with a showcase team.

 

I was going to write a response, but this sums up my feelings exactly. I taught my son to play game to game and win today. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Too many parents are idiots.

 

I agree. To many parents are idiots. In this case lets define idiots as maybe lack of knowledge. Until a kid goes through purbity and becomes a young man, there is nothing definite to determine if they can play and have the tools to play at any next level. Therefore just play, learn the game and have fun. To provide some knowledge here are the standards to play Division 1 Baseball. Though standards and very few kids can make these standards. Also, better be able to hit very well.
