    Nice editorial...

coach1320! I agree with everything you ve said...and have no problems issues persay with the done deal i e the rule change however it is the "unscrupulous" coach the babysitter etc... who has no idea of what they are doing or the game itself. There are more of these than highly quaified excellent coachs in siftball AAND baseball as well! Therefore, an increase an injury will result I sadly believe!

    Sliding with eggs

    Junkie,

Those who aren't taught to slide correctly usually slide on the side of their leg and put their hands down on the ground. This can result in feet and ankles being in akward positions.

The purpose of the eggs is to get them to stop putting their hands down on the ground (and avoiding the possibility of breaking a wrist or jamming fingers). When they can't put their hands on the ground, they have to use the butt that God gave them to land on.

The drill is quite simple. Give each kid an egg for each hand. Either wet the grass down or do it on a rainy day. Put a base or a line about 40 feet away so they have to get up to full speed and tell them to slide. They think about the eggs in their hands rather than their legs. When you get their minds off of thinking about landing on the ground and possible having it hurt, they usually do it automatically. If they put their hands down, they break the egg, the egg gets all over them and they know they did it wrong. You don't have to tell them anything....its self-feedback.

Try it sometime...the kids usually really like it cause it is different and it becomes fun. And hopefully they will learn something from it in the end.

    Oriole,

I agree with you that there are probably a lot more babysitters or coaches just taking a paycheck that truly great coaches, and hopefully one day we can correct that.

As for the unscrupulous coaches, maybe it is the optimist in me but I don't see that many HS coaches being that dirty. But then again I don't know every HS coach in the state. What I do know from being on NCAA and NFCA committees that decide a lot of issues for our level, you cannot legislate morality! Those who decide these issues must try and do what is best for the game...not worry about those who might break them. If this change happens for NC and there are some unscrupulous coaches who teach girls to do the wrong thing, hopefully either the girls, the parents or the school's administration would deal with that person. If a problem does arise, there are proper channels to deal with people like that. But to deny our female athletes opportunities to play the game at a higher level and prepare them better for college because of a few bad apples is wrong.

    No metal.

Cheeze, I attend South Iredell High School. But I am still not convinced, very good arguments though. I guess it is all up to the state of NC though. *fingers crossed*
