This has been listed in The McDowell News for sometime and if anyone knows any coaches that are interested, refer them to this.

"McDowell Post 56 American Legion baseball program is looking for a head coach and assistant coaches. The job includes coaching and scheduling responsibilites from mid-May through early-July, or approximately six weeks. Coaches are also required to recruit players from area high schools and hold tryouts in April. Preferred qualifications include prior coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, or Legion level. A committment to building character and willingness to assist players with exposure to college recruiters, a must.

Anyone interested should contact Post 56 president Bryan Wilson at (828) 652-7235 or email him at [email protected]."

The opening for the McDowell legion job is still running in the local paper as of yesterday.

What schools are coaches able to recruit from and what school do they play their games at?

Post 56, based in Marion, uses mainly kids from McDowell County. But I think they also take some kids from the eastern part of Buncombe County (Owen and AC Reynolds district). Warden likely knows more about that than I do. All the home games for Post 56 is played at McDowell High School.

Dan is right, McDowell can use some Owen-Eastern Buncombe Co. players, but I also think they can pull from Mitchell, Avery, and Mountain Heritage (Yancey Co.). A.C. Reynolds, if Im not mistaken, is apart of Asheville Post 70 territory because they had three players that played for ACR in high school ball.

By what I have read in the paper, no deadline was given.

The McDowell Legion coaching position is STILL being ran in the local paper, I saw it today. Getting kinda late in the game for Post 56 not to have a coach, isn't it? The Legion President and whoever makes the decisions may talk Dennis Blake into coming back just for this season if they can't get anybody to apply?

I thought that Donnie Suttles would coach again this year, but i guess he is not interested or they do not want him coaching. Do these coaches get paid anything or do they do it just because they love the game. I'm sure the pay is not much if anything and legion ball usually lasts for 2 months or so depending on how far you go in the playoffs. Plus on the off days you are practicing. There is one rule that I dislike concerning legion ball in McDowell County that the school board put into place years ago. You can not play ball on sunday in Marion if it is at a public school. So all games they play on sunday are on the road. This is usually when the double-headers are played. I think it is a stupid rule myself. It would be nice if we had another field in this county that was big enough to play high school-legion-and adult baseball on other than the high school field. I play on the adult baseball team (30 and older) in Marion, but we have to go to Black Mt. and Hendersonville to play because we can not get on the field at the high school. But Owen, E. Henderson, and N. Buncombe High Schools let the adult teams use there fields.
