MORGANTON - The Burke County pitching combination of Jeremy Freeman and Justin Johnson kept Shelby Post 82's bats at bay for eight-plus innings.
The ninth inning belonged to the visitors.
Down 3-2 with two outs in the top of the ninth, Shelby erupted for five runs against Johnson and claimed a 7-2 Area IV West Division victory at Shuey Field.

Records: Winners of five straight, Post 82 (7-4 overall) improved to 4-2 in the league. Post 21 (7-3 overall) slipped to 5-2 in division play.
Rally with two: Seth Canipe (3-for-5) delivered the big hit in the ninth. His bases-clearing double to left-centerfield put Post 82 on top for the first time. Jordan Robinson (2-for-4), K.J. Dotson and Corey Cline came home on Canipe's two-bagger. Dotson was running for Jacob Tisdale, who walked, while Cline also reached on a free pass.
Brett Wease (2-for-5, 2 RBI) followed Canipe with another double to make it 7-3.
"I was just trying to get a pitch to hit. I was looking for something in the strikezone and he threw me a fastball," Canipe said. "It's good to know that we can battle with the best teams ... that was a good team over there that we beat tonight."

On the mound: Winning pitcher Eric Shuford (2-2) entered in the bottom of the eighth and kept Burke off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The righthander struck out three with no walks and gave up two hits.
Canipe started and went 4.1 innings, giving up two runs and three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. His only runs allowed came on a Trey Byrd two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
After Byrd's blast, Wease came on in relief and went three innings - yielding one unearned run and four hits. Wease fanned two and walked three, one of which was intentional.
Freeman, a lefthander headed to Gardner-Webb in the fall, tossed five scoreless innings for Post 21and yielded just two hits.

Outfield leather: Centerfielder Brett Mabry robbed Reggie Washington of a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth reaching over the fence.
From rightfield, Shuford had two assists - including a clutch throw to the plate in the fifth to cut down a runner. Leftfielder Jordan Robinson made a tough grab to take a hit away from Byrd to start the seventh.
From a coach: "Defense has been a strong point, and we're throwing strikes," first-year Post 82 assistant Chad Fowler said. "We feel good about all of our kids. We've got a lot of guys contributing right now. We just want to keep the momentum rolling."

Early runs: Wease and Mabry had run-scoring singles in the sixth to pull Post 82 within 3-2. Canipe, who doubled, and catcher Kyle Kendrick (fielder's choice) scored on the hits.
Next: Shelby travels to Hickory today at 7 p.m. in another division game, then will have four days off before travelling to face Dothan, Ala. on Wednesday, June 11.

DOTHAN, ALA. - It's rare in any sport that the team in the lead actually suffers the loss.

That proved to the case Wednesday night for Shelby Post 82 against Dothan, Ala.

Shelby erased a 2-0 deficit in the top of the seventh and battled back to take a 4-2 advantage. Post 82 had the bases loaded and was threatening for more runs before a heavy rainstorm ended play.

Due to the fact that it trailed after the last completed inning, Shelby suffered a hardluck loss in the first game of its 2008 road trip. Post 82 now stands at 8-5 overall.

Big inning: Jordan Robinson, Julian Ridings and Seth Canipe posted doubles in the seventh to put Shelby ahead. Ridings brought in Eric Shuford and Robinson to tie the game with his two-bagger. Canipe, who also led the game off with a double, knocked in Corey Cline to make it 4-2.

Ridings scored on a wild pitch before Canipe's double for Shelby's third run.

Brett Wease was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs, then the strong storm halted the game.

On the mound: Jacob Tisdale started and went five innings, yielding two runs (one earned) and four hits. The righthander struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.

Jordan Robinson tossed a scoreless sixth, striking out two with no walks and allowing one hit.

Next: Post 82 opens play in the Circle City Classic today at 8 p.m. against defending World Series champion Columbia, Tenn.

    GREAT WIN!

    From the Star

DOTHAN, Ala. - Shelby American Legion Post 82 definitely wants to be considered a contender when the Southeastern Regionals and World Series roll around in August on their home field.
They took a big step in making people notice Thursday night. Post 82 whipped defending national champion Columbia, Tenn., Post 19 - which has the bulk of its title winning squad returning - by a 6-1 score in the opening round of the Center City Classic Tournament.

Record: Shelby now is 9-5 on the season and plays a doubleheader in the tournament today facing Sanford, Fla., at 5 p.m., then meeting Team Florida USA in an 8 p.m. clash.

Slamming the door: The Shelby pitching combination of Adam Izokovic and Jordan Robinson kept the clamps on Post 19. Izokovic struck out six before leaving the mound with two runners aboard and no outs in the fourth inning. Robinson came on to get a double play - thanks to diving efforts by both Adam McFarland at third base and Corey Cline at second - and was able to escape trouble.
Robinson (3-0) struck out six in his four innings of work. Columbia, which had only four hits, scored with two outs in the final inning.

Jumping ahead: Post 82 put up four runs in the third inning highlighted by McFarland's RBI single and Julian Ridings' run-scoring double.
Insurance: Seth Canipe drove in Shelby's fifth run in the fifth inning with a double and later crossed on Wease's RBI single.

Adding up: Post 82 collected 13 hits against Columbia's Scott Beasley, who went the distance. Brett Mabry led the charge with three hits. Julian Riding, Eric Shuford and Wease added two hits apiece.

    not a good day

    From the star

DOTHAN, ALA. - Shelby Post 82's Seth Canipe delivered a home run in the first inning in both games but Shelby couldn't build on that early momentum and suffered a pair of losses Friday during the Circle City Classic Tournament.
Shelby (9-7) lost both games by the 8-run mercy rule being used in the tournament.
Final scores: Sanford, Fla. 9, Shelby 1, 6 innings; Team Florida USA 13, Shelby 3, 5 innings

    Game one
Canipe's home run and a double by Kyle Kendrick proved to be the only hits Post 82 could muster in the five-inning contest. Jacob Tisdale walked in the fifth and was the only other Shelby baserunner.
Canipe (0-1) suffered the mound loss, going three innings and yielding three earned runs on five hits. Brett Wease gave up six runs (five earned) in two innings of relief work, while K.J. Dotson tossed a scoreless sixth.
Sanford, which steadily put the game out of reach, had 11 hits and took advantage of three Shelby errors.

    Game two
Canipe provided a home run and two hits to lead the offense. Brett Mabry added two doubles and one RBI, while Wease brought in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Eric Shuford (2-3) gave up eight runs in three innings and absorbed the loss. Adam Izokovic was touched for five runs (three earned) in one inning in relief. Kyle Nanney pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
Post 82 yielded 11 hits and committed five errors in the contest.

Next: Shelby returns to tournament play today as it faces Tuscaloosa, Ala., at 2 p.m. then takes on East Alabama in a 5 p.m. clash
Post 82 must win both games today to have a shot at reaching the semifinals and championship round on Sunday.

HICKORY - There must be something about the North Carolina air that allows the Shelby American Legion Post 82 batters to relax and produce big numbers.

After losing four games in a row in a tournament at Dothan, Ala., the friendly confines of the Post 48 home park at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Shelby. The Post 82 lineup produced 14 hits in a 12-0 victory Tuesday night.

Records: Shelby 10-9 overall, 6-2 Area IV Western Division, Hickory 0-10 division 1-11

Next: Shelby crosses the state line tonight to take on Gaffney,S.C., in a non-conference encounter at 7.
Shutting'em down: Righthander Jacob Tisdale (1-1) delivered six shutout innings for the win. He struck out six, allowed only two hits and walked two.

Adam Izokovic pitched a scoreless seventh, thanks to two scintillating defensive plays at third base by James Gold.
Big bats: Kyle Kendrick led the Post 82 assault with three hits. Eric Shuford and Jordan Robinson contributed two hits apiece.

Adam McFarland belted a three-run home run and Brett Mabry had a two-run single. Seth Canipe, Brett Wease, K.J. Dotson and Julian Bridges also supplied RBI singles in the win.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - At this point of the American Legion baseball season it's all about momentum for the Shelby Post 82 squad.
That was evident during the struggles during the recent Alabama trip the team made but now Post 82 is trying to pick up a full head of steam. It helped that Shelby notched its second consecutive win Wednesday night, gaining a 3-1 non-league win on the road against Gaffney at the Cherokee County Sports Complex.

    Record: Shelby is 11-9 overall
Next: Post 82 hit the road again to Mooresville in another non-league outing tonight. Shelby will then play Henderson County at Brevard Friday.

By committee: By design, Shelby got some work for a lot of its pitching staff in the win over Gaffney. Seth Canipe, Jordan Robinson, Eric Shuford, Brett Wease and Adam Izokovic limited Gaffney to a first-inning run and only five hits. The group combined for six strikeouts and walked only three.
Robinson (4-1) was the pitcher of record and Izokovic registered a save.
At the plate: Adam McFarland led the Post 82 attack with three hits. Julian Ridings and Kyle Kendrick contributed two hits apiece.

Crossing home: Eric Shuford singled home Ridings in the top of the second to make it 1-1.
Ridings doubled, moved to third on Shuford's bunt and scored on Corey Cline's sacrifice fly in the third to go in front 2-1.
Post 82 got an insurance run in the fifth innings when McFarland singled in Canipe for the 3-1 edge.

MOORESVILLE - Shelby Post 82 pounded out 14 hits, including six for extra bases, and claimed a 9-5 win over Mooresville in a non-division contest at Mooresville High.

Record: Shelby captured its third straight win and improved to 12-9 overall.

Big hitters: Kyle Kendrick finished with three hits, including a double, to lead the way. Adam McFarland had two hits with a two-run home run -his second long ball in three games. Corey Cline added two doubles, while Brett Mabry and Eric Shuford contributed two hits each.

Jordan Robinson slugged a solo home run for his team-leading fifth blast of the season.

From a coach: "We need to be able to produce from top to bottom," Shelby Post 82 assistant coach Chris Emery said. "Even the kids that didn't have hits tonight had sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies. When everybody is contributing, it makes things a lot easier."

On the mound: Jacob Tisdale (2-1) collected the win as the righthander worked innings three-through-five. Tisdale gave up one unearned run and one hit.

Sterling Cole started and went two innings, yielding three earned runs and four hits. Eric Shuford (2 innings) and K.J. Dotson (1.1 inning) came on in relief, before Adam Izokovic retired the last two Mooresville batters to notch his second save in as many nights.

Coming back: Shelby Post 82 trailed 3-0 after three innings, then rallied to tie the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Mooresville went back on top 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth before Shelby took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.

Next: Post 82 will look to improve on its 6-2 record in the Area IV West Division with a road game Friday at Hendersonville. Game time is 7 p.m. at Brevard College.

BREVARD - Shelby Post 82 won its fifth of the season by the 10-run mercy rule as it cruised past Hendersonville Post 77, 15-3, in seven innings.

The win was Shelby's fourth in a row since returning from its trip to Alabama. Post 82 (12-9 overall) improved to 7-2 in the Area IV West Division.

Leading the way: Shelby had seven players with multi-hit games and finished with 20 hits on the night.

Jordan Robinson, Brett Wease and James Gold posted three hits each. Robinson had a double and four RBI, while Wease scored twice and Gold added a double.

Kyle Kendrick delivered two hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs. Brett Mabry, Adam McFarland and Corey Cline also had two hits for Post 82. Mabry slugged his first home run of the season - a three-run shot to highlight a 12-run first inning. Mabry is the 10th player to homer for Shelby this year.

Plenty of arms: Seth Canipe went the first two innings and got the win, improving to 1-1 on the season. Canipe yielded one earned run and two hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Jordan Robinson worked the next two innings, then Eric Shuford, Mabry and Wease worked one inning of relief work each.

Big finish: Robinson, playing leftfield, cut down a Post 77 runner at home plate as the catcher Kendrick made the tag for the final out in the bottom of the seventh.

By the numbers: Post 82's 12-run first inning was the most runs it has scored in a single inning this season. Shelby sent 15 batters to the plate in the first. Post 82 has now scored 35 runs in 14 innings against Hendersonville in 2008.

Saturday: Shelby gets back into division action at Taylorsville. Game time is 7 p.m. at Alexander Central High School.
