TAYLORSVILLE - One of the old radio disc jockey clichés was "the hits just keep on coming!"
The phrase could describe the Shelby Post 82 baseball team at the moment.

Shelby pounded out 19 hits and continued its recent binge against opposing pitching in a 17-3 Area IV Western Division victory Saturday night against Taylorsville Post 170 at Alexander Central High School.

Record: Shelby is now 8-2 in the division, 14-9 overall
Next: Post 82 faces a major challenge at Caldwell County tonight in Granite Falls. First pitch is at 7.

Reversal of fortune: The first time Shelby met Taylorsville this season the Post 82 hitters were stymied in a 2-0 defeat. This time they scored in each of the first six innings - including a seven run outburst in the sixth inning - and put the contest away early.

Streak: In its current five game winning streak since returning from its Alabama trip, Post 82 has scored at least nine runs in four of those games. That includes 32 runs the past two nights.
Catcher Kyle Kendrick ran his string of multi-hit contests to five games with two hits, including a double. He has a total of 12 hits in the past five contests for Post 82.

Hit parade: Adam McFarland and Seth Canipe each supplied three hits for the victors.
McFarland has a two-run home run and a double and drove in five runs on the night. Canipe also had a double.
Brett Wease, Julian Ridings and Jordan Robinson joined Kendrick in contributing two hits apiece. Wease scored four runs on the night, and Ridings had a double.

Mound trio: Shelby continued to spread the mound work around. Sterling Cole started and worked two shutout innings. Kyle Nanney allowed three runs in three innings of work and Jay Robinson closed it out with two scoreless innings.
Cole (4-1) was the pitcher of record.

GRANITE FALLS - One of those confusing Yogi-isms that one Lawrence Berra, the Yankee Hall of Famer catcher, used to throw out was that "good pitching stops good hitting and vice versa."

In a strange way, that applies to the situation Shelby Post 82 finds itself in at present.
After blasting opposing pitching since its return from an Alabama tournament, perennial Area IV Western Division contender Caldwell County had just the answer for cooling down Post 82. Its strategy was to light up the scoreboard with its own bats and force Shelby to keep up. The visitors at M.S. Deal Park couldn't match Caldwell's output and fell 11-2 Sunday night.

Records: Shelby slipped to 8-3 in division play, 14-10 overall; Caldwell Post 29 - just back from its own trip to a tournament in Omaha - improved to 7-1 in the division and 12-4 overall.
Next: Shelby goes back on the road tonight with a non-league encounter at Rock Hill, S.C.

Delayed: Caldwell pulled out ahead 3-0 it still stood that way during a lightning delay in the top of the sixth inning. When play resumed, Post 82 punched across a pair of unearned runs to make it 3-2.
Turning point: Josh Severt's long running catch of a drive off the bat of Shelby's Seth Canipe when the score was 3-2 in the top of the seventh put an end to Post 82's momentum.

Big inning: Post 29 though batted around in its half of the seventh with a seven run explosion, highlighted by Lucas Jackson's grand slam home run off Shelby reliever Adam Izokovic.

On the mound: Shelby's pitching crew of starter Eric Shuford (2-4), Jordan Robinson, Izokovic and Jacob Tisdale gave up 12 hits on the night. Making things tougher was four errors committed by Post 82.
Brian Tuttle went seven innings for Caldwell to gain the win. Cody Porch finished up for Post 29.
At the plate: Brett Wease had two of Shelby's five hits.

CHERRYVILLE - Put a pair of rivals against one another on the baseball field like Shelby Post 82 and Cherryville Post 100 and there are several things you can bank:
There's a good chance it will be a one-run game.

    Check.
Post 100 stayed unbeaten in Area IV Western Division play with a 7-6 win against Shelby at Fraley Field.
With all the emotion generated by the teams and their avid followers, you can count on players on both teams rising to the occasion, especially on the defensive side of the game.

    Check, check.
Cherryville centerfielder Al Benson and Shelby third baseman Adam McFarland seemed to take turns making outstanding plays. You can also mix in a leaping stab by Post 100 second baseman Drew Reynolds and Shelby centerfielder Seth Canipe running down a long drive at the fence to save their respective pitchers.
Also, in a contest such as this, there will be a pivotal play with a little bit of an odd twist that helps determine the outcome.

    Check times three.
With Shelby up 6-4 in the top of the seventh and threatening for more, Benson made a long run to catch a short pop to center by Corey Cline. Post 82 runner Eric Shuford saw the chance to dash for the play and slid across for what appeared to be an insurance run. However, Shelby's Julian Ridings, on first base when the play began, was at second believing the original fly ball had dropped in, and Cherryville was able to whip the throw behind him to Reynolds for the tag on Ridings as he attempted to return to first. Because the option of a force play was still intact, it erased Shuford's dash to the plate.

That proved fateful in the bottom of the seventh when Korey Martin launched a three-run home run off Shuford to give Cherryville the lead for good.
Shelby (8-4 division, 14-11 overall) out-hit Post 100 10-8 but Cherryville cranked three home runs on the night. Aaron Haynes had a two-run shot and Benson a solo blast for Post 100.

McFarland had three hits - all infield singles - with Canipe adding a pair of hits. Jake Watts had two hits for Cherryville (13-0 division, 20-1 overall).
"We learned we've just got to get a little better daily and weekly to go where I want us to go," Post 82 head coach Mike Grayson said.
Aaron Haynes pitched into the eighth to get the win for Cherryville. Jake Watts got the last four outs of the game, stranding a pair of runners in the ninth, for a save. Shuford, the third of four Shelby pitchers, took the loss.

"Aaron settled down after they got those four runs in the second inning and put a few goose eggs up there (on the board)," Cherryville coach Bobby Reynolds said. "We wanted Jake (Watts) to go against some of their lefthanders and he came in and did his job."
The two teams meet against tonight at Shelby's Keeter Stadium and Veterans Field at 7.

No surprise, Thursday's battle between Shelby Post 82 and Cherryville Post 100 - the second meeting in as many days - provided plenty of drama.

This time, Shelby came out on the winning end in its first home game of the season at the renovated Veterans Field and Keeter Stadium.

Seth Canipe raced home from third when a pop fly at the back of the infield off the bat of Kyle Kendrick was dropped by the Post 100 shortstop with two outs to seal the 3-2 victory.

Canipe reached on a walk, then moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Wease when he noticed nobody covering the bag while the Cherryville first baseman had the ball.

"We were real pumped up for finally getting to play at home," said Post 82 winning pitcher Adam Izokovic. "We had a lot of momentum from that, and we were going to carry it out no matter what."

Records: Shelby 15-11 overall, 9-4 Area IV West; Cherryville 20-2, 13-1 division.

Early scoring: Post 82 took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Jordan Robinson knocked in both Shelby runs - plating Julian Ridings in the second with a single, then bringing home Corey Cline in the fourth with a double to right. Ridings had a base hit to reach, while Cline doubled.

Answering: Facing Izokovic (1-0), Cherryville's Tripp McSwain singled to center in the sixth inning to bring home Jake Watts and Seth Freeman, who both had base hits.

The numbers: Cline had two hits and reached three times, while Robinson also had two hits for Post 82. Canipe, Kendrick, Adam McFarland and Ridings had one hit each.
Post 100 was led by Benson's three hits and Drew Reynolds' two hits.

On the mound: Izokovic went nine innings and scattered nine hits. The righthander struck out four and walked three (one intentional). Post 82 made no errors behind Izokovic, while Cherryville committed two.

Izokovic, a Gardner-Webb University signee and Burns graduate, has worked mostly out of the bullpen during the American Legion season, but proved to be plenty durable in a complete-game effort.

"It's a different way of warming up and getting loose," Izokovic said of the differences of being a starter and a reliever. "But I started a lot during school ball and that got me ready for it."

Cory Parks started and went just 1.2 innings as he came out of the game after a lengthy rain delay in the bottom of the second. Phillip Russ went 5.1 innings after the delay and gave up one run and five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Freeman tossed the final inning and took the hardluck loss.

Stranded: Both teams had more opportunities to score through the game. Shelby stranded nine runners on the night and had three runners ruled out on the bases.

Canipe was cut down at home trying to score from second on a base hit to left in the seventh for the second out. Brett Mabry was doubled off third on a sharp liner to short to end a threat in the eighth.

Post 100 left 11 on the bags, including five in scoring position. The shortstop Wease, the second baseman Cline and the rightfielder Jacob Tisdale made one tough play each in the field to lead Shelby's defensive effort.

"In a game like this kids are just trying so hard to make plays," Post 82 assistant coach Chris Emery said. "Sometimes you try to do much and that can bite you. I thought we did a good job tonight after we made mistakes to just put those behind us."

Next: Shelby hosts Rutherford County today at 7 p.m. Cherryville is slated to play in the North/South Challenge in Wilmington on Saturday and Sunday.

Shelby Post 82 piled up 21 runs and 24 hits in one of those contests Friday night where everyone gets to play.
Yet even though Post 82 rang up a 21-15 Area IV Western Division win against visiting Rutherford County at Veterans Field and Keeter Stadium, the contest went on a little longer than planned.

The host team led 19-4 entering the top of the seventh needing only three outs for the game to be over early due to the 10-run mercy rule. Rutherford County had other ideas, pushing six runs across in the inning and forcing the contest to go all nine innings.

Records: Shelby 10-4 division, 16-11 overall; Rutherford County 8-6 division (and overall)
What's next: Post 82 is back home tonight for a 7 o'clock contest with Lake Norman.
On Sunday, Shelby will host a day/night doubleheader. Post 82 faces Rock Hill, S.C., at 2 p.m., then takes on Denver at 7 p.m.

Hit parade: Adam McFarland, Brett Mabry and Julian Ridings supplied three hits apiece to spark the Post 82 barrage. Seth Canipe, Brett Wease, Kyle Kendrick, Corey Cline and James Gold contributed two hits each.
Mabry and Ridings each collected three RBI in the contest with McFarland - who doubled twice - picking up a pair.

Mound brigade: Eric Shuford started for Shelby and worked five innings to get the win. He allowed four runs, three earned. K.J. Dotson, Jay Robinson and Kyle Nanney all saw pitching duty before the end.

Bunting exhibition: Shelby jumped up 4-0 in the first inning largely due to its ability to drop bunts down against Rutherford starting pitching Jon Garmon. Wease, Kendrick and Mabry all successfully beat out bunts for Post 82 in the rally. McFarland had a sacrifice fly and Ridings a run-scoring single during the outburst.

Shelby Post 82's Jacob Tisdale followed many of the golden rules of pitching Saturday night against visiting Lake Norman - work ahead in the count, mix up your pitches and let the defense work behind you.

The formula proved effective as the righthander from Crest High tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in Post 82's 10-0 triumph at Veterans Field and Keeter Stadium.

Records: Shelby 11-4 Area IV West, 17-11 overall; Lake Norman 3-11 division, 6-12.

The tally: Tisdale, a rising junior, struck out eight and retired the first eight Post 501 batters he faced. After issuing a walk to Logan Rowe in the top of the third, the righty sat down 13 in a row to finish off the first no-hitter at any level of his playing career.

Tisdale recorded eight flyouts or popups and got five groundouts as Post 82 made the plays behind him.

From the pitcher: "I was just hitting the corners and able to put the fastball where I wanted it," Tisdale said.
"There's nothing like it ... especially to be able to do it in a brand new stadium. I wasn't even thinking about the no-hitter, I just went out and pitched."

Three-inning outburst: Shelby scored early and often and took a 9-0 lead after three innings to get its pitcher plenty of run support. In a balanced effort, eight different Post 82 players scored during the early rally. Post 501 starter Chase Ervin lasted just two innings and got the loss.

Post 82 offense: Jordan Robinson (2-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI); Brett Mabry (1-for-3, 2 RBI); Seth Canipe (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, run); Julian Ridings (1-for-3, 2B, run); Brett Wease (1-for-2, RBI); Kyle Kendrick (1-for-2, RBI, 2 runs); James Gold (1-for-2, RBI); Adam McFarland (1-for-4, run); Corey Cline (2 walks, 2 runs).

Finishing touch: Mabry knocked in Kendrick with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win and Tisdale's no-hitter. Kendrick singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.

From a coach: "There's no pressure on one or two to come through, any of them can step up and get the big hit and get us some runs," Post 82 assistant Steve Gold said. "We've been swinging it well the last few games."

Next: Shelby hosts a day-night doubleheader today. Post 82 takes on Rock Hill, S.C., at 2 p.m., then faces Denver at 7 p.m. Both are non-division contests.

Record: Post 82 improved to 19-10 overall. Shelby has won four in a row and nine of its last 11 games.
Later today: Shelby will host Denver at 7 p.m. to complete the day-night twinbill.

On the attack: Kyle Kendrick and Adam McFarland had three hits and two RBI each to lead Post 82's 16-hit outburst. Julian Ridings (4 RBI) and Julian Bridges (RBI) added two hits apiece, while Jordan Robinson slugged a three-run home run in the third inning.

Shelby sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the third inning to break things open. Post 82 also batted around in the first and fifth innings, respectively. The win was Shelby's seventh of the season by virtue of the mercy rule.
Post 82 benefited from six Rock Hill errors.

On the mound: Seth Canipe (2-1) worked six innings and gave up just one run and three hits to pick up the win. The righthander struck out nine and walked three. Jay Robinson tossed the final inning of relief work.
Rock Hill finished with six hits.
