I wish I had major good news, but we'll have to take things in tiny steps for a little while.

Christian is still in a coma, but his cranial swelling is under control. He is beginning to show some movement on one side, but that's it. Earlier this week, it looked like he was developing pneumonia, but that seems to be under control at this time.

It's still way too early to give a prognosis .... it's going to be a long battle.

    Update: And it's finally positive

Christian is finally off the ventilator and breathing on his own. He is moving his left arm/leg and openning both eyes and looking at you (not alertly, consistently) when you talk to him. It's more of those "What the heck do you want" looks for waking him up.

They drilled a new burr hole to relieve more pressure on the brain yesterday, but, overall, things are beginning to look up a little.

Here's the scoop: After hospitalization (which will take ??? much longer), he's looking at about 1 year over at Charlotte Institute for Rehabiliation. The hospitalization isn't the issue. It's the fact that he has a single mom who is self-employed as a hair-dresser and she hasn't left the hospital in the past 2 weeks. She may not be able to get home more than overnight in the next 2 weeks either. Rent, food, electricity ... those are the issues (and the fact that Christian has a 5 year old little brother, staying with neighbors).

    How can you help?

We've set up a methodology for helping his mom pay her bills. The Charlotte Pregnancy Care Center will accept donations directed to his family needs and pay the bills directly as money is available. Contributions for this may be sent to:

    Charlotte Pregnancy Care Center
    1311 East Morehead Street
    Charlotte, NC 28204

Write "Client Fund: McClendon" in the Remarks section of the check. Checks directed to an individual client needs like this aren't tax deductable, but that's a small price to pay.

The Center can also take donations via MasterCard/Visa. If you wish to follow this route, the contact person at the center is:

Joanie Page, Financial Director (704) 372-5981

Thanks everyone for all the prayers. They have worked wonders so far, but there is a LONG way to go.

Though there continues to progress, and the critical stage is over, the overall news isn't good.

As I said, Christian is in a private room now. He will probably be transfered to Charlotte Insitute for Rehabiliation in a week or two. The critical time is over but the struggle is just beginning.

EEG's reveal much more extensive damage from the stroke than first feared. He (and his family) are looking at 2 years constant therapy over at Clt. Rehab. This is to regain some of the skills of daily living, relearning how to walk (with a walker in all probability) and trying to regain some speech.

The first battle is over, but the war is just beginning.

    Update:

After today's visit with Christian, I gotta tell ya, the news is great !!!!

He is smiling, responding (non-verbally) to questions, laughing at jokes .... you can tell he is "there" !!!!

He hasn't had much right-side movement yet and the speech will take a while, but he is "on the right road".

On the other side, his mom (single parent) hasn't been able to work for a month now.

Christian will be moving out of CMC to Charlotte Institute for Rehabiliation TOMORROW which is great news.

    Thanks guys !!!!!
