Wilmington Laney (19-9) won the Eastern title over the weekend, beating Lee County two games to one, but the Western representative wasn't decided until Tuesday night due to rain as East Forsyth finally downed T.C. Roberson 7-2 in the third game of that series.

Luke Tendler paces the Laney attack in a variety of offensive categories, with a .575 batting average and a whopping 897 slugging percentage to go with 14 doubles and four homers. Dallas Perdue leads the Vikings pitching staff in wins with six.

East Forsyth (23-8) has gotten excellent play from shortstop Evan Orenstein, who is batting .382 with eight homers, has served in the closer's role and then made his only start on the mound on Tuesday night to pitch the clinching win over Roberson. The Eagles have several other long ball threats, including Garrett Robinson and Luke Dunlap with nine homers each.

    East Forsyth

My son played with Evan Ornstein and Langdon O'Dell last summer. Haven't heard much about their future plans. Truly a couple of great ball players and all around good-guys. Can Eagles help me out with what's going on with them? No surprise they are in Championship game. Good Luck.

You may want to edit that if you are talking about Laney's mascot.. they are the Bucs. Cross town rival Hoggard is the Vikings to the best of my Port City Baseball Knowledge.

O'Dell has not committed anywhere yet that I know of. Orenstein, I think he is going to go to Wofford on academic scholarship and try to walk on there. (kid is very smart, he brother was valadictorian at East in 05). That's all I know on those two. The Eagles have hit throughout the line-up all year long and they have strong pitching. I hope the Eagles can bring home their first baseball state championship this weekend!!

Here's how the two did against like opponents:

    ER 6 NW Guilford 5
NW Guilford 12 Laney 2 - their worst loss of the year, but it was more than two months ago.

    Laney 9 West Forsyth 3
    West Forsyth 5 EF 4

EF has won 10 of its last 12; Laney comes in on a 10-game win streak, nearly all of them on the road.

And that might play to Laney's advantage. All of EF's regular season losses were on the road except one. They had the luxury of playing at home throughout the playoffs while Laney spent most of that time in uncomfortable surroundings, getting road tested.
