I believe MaxPrep rankings are based primarily on the score results that they receive and playoff results. Many games are omitted that they do not have a score reported.

Teams like East Meck and Independence were ranked relatively low in the MaxPrep system because of the large number of conference losses they accumulated in the SW4A. Obviously they were much stronger than their MP ranking as evident by their non-conference results.

Just like any poll, they are fun to look at and have banter about, but in the end, they are just another opinion and not gospel. It is next to impossible to rank teams without seeing everyone.

Even if you could see everyone, that is only a snap shot as teams ebb and flow throughout the season. In baseball, a team's strength that day is relative to their starting pitcher, i.e. the Kansas City Royals are an excellent team when Zach Greinke pitches; other days, not so much.

Last season, both 4A finalists were number three seeds entering the playoffs and not ranked in the top 10. So how accurate do I think they represent teams across the state? Once again, not so much.
