    Pretty Sad

I happened to be there and witness this. The ump was totally out of line and had no clue what the call was. He bullied the coach which is an unfair tactic. The field ump obviously didnt know what the correct call was so he just made one. Ther coach asked the plate ump to help him and he said do you have a question or are you just hollering. He said it wasn't his call. The coach appeared to be saying it is a rule question and he was the head ump in the game. What a joke it became.. I watched the game before too and both those teams were all over him. I mean it was a situational game which meant nothing. I actually thanked the next group of umps we had the next day. They werent perfect but neither are we. They did a reasonable job and we got beat! haha Oh well.. I am back to the baseball field next weekend at Coastal Carolina...

As a side note.. The balls were crap! They bounced like rubber balls... Lets go play some hard ball!

    Let it ride

May Pee off some people here, but if this was a showcase game, your coaches are better off letting the bad umps do their little thing. When you stop the game, which is probably on a time limit, you're taking away valuable time from the girls & coaches there to watch. I believe the coaches observing can plainly see the blue makes a bad call. TB coaches remember this when you get bad calls. Let em ride, keep the game going, you're trying to get those girls all the time you can.

When you're playing in those games there is a tendency to forget that you aren't really competing--you're showcasing. Maybe they should include the umps as part of the "play" so they can put on their performance, also.

I'm aware of the "value" of showcases and "situation" games but in my opinion it takes away from the game. At least the competition part of it. I long for the old days when the girls really competed. Without "time limits" with no time outs, etc.

I know, there are still some legitimate competitive tournaments around. I just wish there was a better way (and I believe there is) for the girls to be seen. It's just too much commercialization. Reminds me of Christmas.

    Showcases

Lots of people don't care for showcases vs bracket play. I just know that I see no difference in the way the Cobras play when they step on the field. Those girls do not care, I don't even think they know the difference, they just wanna win, showcase or not.

Yeah, I definitely believe that! It's not the girls, necessarily, that want the showcases. I haven't met one yet that didn't want to compete and win. But I have heard some that felt like the team wasn't competing to win, but to show off players. And sometimes when the college people weren't even there.

It's fun for coaches and spectators and it's fun for the players. The difference is the players are putting out sweat and blood; we're only putting out sweat. And dollars, of course.

Amen Todd. Was told this exact same thing by a college coach at the Diamond showcase the weekend before. And I quote "don't take away from my time to see the girls because you don't agree with a call." Time is valuable in showcase ball. And as far as the ball goes, didn't like it, but we all hit the same thing. Everyone knew they were bad including the colleges and i don't blame Coach Tucker at all. They had an ASA stamp on them and she had 16 dozen new ones that had to be used. Good tourney as always for Greensboro College.

    Questioning Umpires

As a coach, I will never question an umpire about balls, strikes, safe or out, although we often disagree with their calls. They are truly judgement calls, and I will talk to umps between innings to find out why my pitcher isn't getting strikes at the knees, corners, etc.
I will always question an umpire when they don't interpret the rule correctly during a game....showcase or not. That is your job as a coach and hopefully educate an umpire along the way to look the rule up(wishful thinking).

My players are putting their heart and sole into the game and doing what they are taught to do at their positions. When an umpire makes the wrong call because he doesn't know the rule, then my players need to understand that they didn't do anything wrong and that the umpire is clearly in the wrong. Unfortunately, some umpires won't admit they made a mistake and correct a wrong.
