Does anyone know why a private school (Charlotte Catholic) is allowed to play in the state tournament against the public schools when most of the private schools in the charlotte area do not play in the NCHSAA tournament?
    Thanks

I may be wrong but I think it has something to do with Catholic being the first private school in NC a long time ago. They had to play public schools because there were no other private schools. They were allowed to be grandfathered in the public school system and play public schools while remaining private. This is how it was explained to me, although I don't like it.

They have always played by the NCHSAA rules, not the private school rules. Transfers must sit a year and there is no reclassification of players,( 8 semester rule). If I'm not mistaken they have always played in the public leagues. I'm also pretty sure they were the 1st and only private school in Charlotte when they opened up so they had nobody to play except the public schools.

There use to be 3 private schools in the NCHSAA:
    *Charlotte Catholic
    *Cardinal Gibbons
    *Bishop McGuinness

    Might be more now.

We just got buzzed pretty good by a public school last night so I wouldn't worry about it. The truth is, Cardinal Gibbons is a very large private school and fits in the 3A category much better than it would fit in the independent league based on the size of the student body. Catholics send their kids to the Catholic school system in droves and they have some commonality with the public schools in that regard. All of the feeder middle schools are really small. I would say the only advantage we have is that the schools are so small that sixth graders get to participate actively where as in the publics a kid might not even make the roster until eighth grade because the schools are so large. Of course club ball is starting to overshadow what is going on with school ball anyway, unfortunately in my opinion. Just my two cents.

    Private vs. Public

All of you guys are correct for the most part -- particularly ASU86. My wife and I both grew up in the Catholic school system here in Charlotte. We have sent our kids to Catholic school all the way thru. Both are now at Charlotte Catholic. There was discussion years ago about Catholic becoming an independent and competing against the likes of Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, Providence Day, Charlotte Christian, Ravenscroft, etc. However, these schools give athletic scholarships to students. They may not call them "athletic scholarships" -- but that is what they do. The Catholic schools have never done this. That's is why we compete against the public schools. And yes, we have always played by the same rules as the public schools.
