    Great Coach

Great qualities already listed, here are some I believe.

    1. A great coach should be honest even when it hurts the most
    2. A great coach should be dedicated, to his program, his players, and his school. (Extra work on the weekend to cut the grass or any field work)
    3. A great coach should treat all of his players the same, from the D1 prospect, to the player that will never put on his cleats again after his senior year, that means if you are getting 10 cuts for BP thats what all players should get even the ones who better, the extra cuts are what pre or post practice is for...
    4. A great coach should have a love for the game and should show his players how and why the game is so great...
    5. A great coach should never stop being a student of the game, even if he has been in the game for 30 years... attend clinics, read books, watch DVDS, and last but not least check TBR at least once a week for new info... Thanks guys you all make this site great!!!

Who said you need to get paid to coach?

There are a lot of excellent comments on this.

As educators you get paid to do just that. Teach. When it comes down to coaching a sport for the HS that you teach at well then it comes down to how you want to spend your off time.

Volunteer. Lot of grit and grind there. Heck. Lots of people volunteer. Why not volunteer your efforts for the very school that you teach at.

HS coaches no matter the sport are probably the best people out there.

    IMO

    Great point!
If the coach has a "Genuine" love for the game, his players will see it through his dedication(in,off, and pre-season), discipline, love for his players, and his commitment as a coach to make himself and the team better through his continuing pursuit of knowing this great game.

    Good coach

A good HS coach doesnt cut the better more dedicated player so that his son, who always played behind the better player can be showcased. Whats best for the team shouldnt include personal interests by the coach.
    Final score 2-0.......

five rules for a good coach

Most of these have been hit upon in earlier posts. These are the qualities of a "five tool" coach (IMO!)

    1. Teach the Game... from the basics to the finer points. This can raise the average team to a championship caliber team. This should include not only the "mechanics" of the game, but also the concept of "team", sportsmanship, discipline and academic responsibility.

    2. Provide the best facilities and equipment possible... this gives the kids a safe, productive place to practice and play. Also, it should be fan friendly to encourage folks to come see games. This makes it more fun for the players and gives a boost to fund raising.

    3. Promote Deserving Players... if a coach has a player that desires to play beyond high school and that coach believes the player has the ability (athletically and academically) to do so, then he should do everything in his power to help that player reach his goals. Also teach that player the importance of "giving back" to the program.

    4. Play to Win... every player on the team and every parent/fan in the stands needs to fully understand that the coach is going to put the nine players on the field that gives the team it's best opportunity to win. The coach needs to encourage competition for playing time. In other words, every starter needs to "win" his position and time on the field. This makes every player, as well as the team, the best they can be.

    5. Develop/Encourage the "Feeder System"... a coach should know where his future players are coming from. Camps, at the high school, for the youth league level players in the area can begin relationships between the coach and players. Go see some youth league games, the kids will get a kick out of playing with the coach watching. Get to know the coaches at that level and let them know what is expected of players when they reach high school.

As is true with the "five tool" player, it is not common for a high school coach to excel at all of the above. But if he strives to, then his program will be successful, and respected, for many seasons to come.

A coach should be able to objectively evaluate players and their potential. The coach should be a manager by delegating responsibilities to assistants and trusting their opinions.

softballphreak, I ain't that smart! Maybe Braves can post it over there. I do have a vested interest in the softball board. My DD is a sophomore and hopes to play in college after high school.
