My son has wriiten his contact letters to send to the colleges. My question is where does he send them? Does he just send them to the main campus address and put it to the baseball coaches attention? He knows the names of the coaches.

    Many Thanks,
    blademan

Its best to do the research and send it to the coach's office...
    btw..
Make sure you address it to the proper coach...
sometimes a coach leaves or gets fired.. ya want to make a good impression of at least knowing who the coach's are..

If you know the Recruiting Coordinator then address the letter to him....if you don't know who the Recruiting Coordinator is you can usually find it on the athletic web page for the school.

    Blademan,

The only thing I would add to what the others have already said, is in addition to a contact letter, fill out a recruiting questionaire and follow up with a very brief email. The email should simply say you've sent a letter and the questionaire, and you should reiterate your interest in their program. THE "YOU" I'm refering to should be your son.

Both the questionaire and email addresses are on most athletic websites.

    My thoughts...

If a player asks I send out recommendation(s) otherwise take the initiative and contact the HC directly by mail preferably! If no response (which shouldn t) be the case send a second follow up letter a long with any copies of clippings etc.. Perhaps game tape etc... No guarantee but worth a shot! Any coach that is worth his name will at the HS level communicate constantly with his players in which he feels can play at the next level regardless, encourage him to do so, ask of schools of interest and will make DIRECT contact for you as well... I have made literally hundreds of calls on behalf of my former players and some helped others did not! It is part of a HS coaches duties as a professional and don t count on anhyone regardless if YOU want to play at the next level! JMHO and two cents!

I really thank you all for the responses. Just so you'll know a little about "my son". LOL! He's a junior so this will be his early contact letters. I'm a lifelong Charlotte resident, played baseball at West Meck in the 70's. My kid played at University City rec assoc. growing up. I started an AAU team when he was 9 and a couple years later Mo Huneycutt and myself started the Carolina Royals AAU, where jarhead (my son) played until 13. We moved to Union County where he now goes to Piedmont. His coach says he'll play second base, maybe short when Rob Lyerly pitches. He was one of two sophomores to make varsity last year. I coached the middle school program there. I now coach the Carolina Clash, and we played this fall in the Carolinas Piedmont Fall Showcase League, a league that Bill Capps started this year. jarhead led the team this fall in every offensive category except HR's, where he was second with one (at Limestone). He played all but a few innings at MI, without an error. Growing up I also coached an older son so jarhead picked up a lot early. When he was old enough he started working with some guys on his baseball skills. Over the years he has worked with Jeff Johnson (JJ), Gary Robinson, Terry Brewer, Gary Smith (Smitty), Mark Mennitt, Ryan Baker, Bo Robinson, Mike Schildt, etc., etc. He has the talent, grades, and most importantly to me, the desire and work ethic to play after High School. Sites like this and the HSBBW are a Godsend for parents wanting to help their children fulfill there wishes. I'm trying to help him through the process without interfering too much. The fall showcase league was a big help for me because I was able to meet a lot of college coaches and talk to them. It's interesting listening to them and finding out what they look for. It really helps me relate to him those things. It's also suprising to find out that many of those things are not baseball related, but more to do with character. Anyway, just proud daddying a little here. Best of luck to everyone in the soon upcoming season, and I'll try to keep you posted with the updates.

Wow...your son sure has worked with the best set of coaches you can find in this area. It sounds like you have a "player" on your hands. Good luck on his season and his future. We're glad to have you on board.

I am a little surprised that the college coaches are talking to you. If your son is an underclassman, it is strictly forbidden....unles it is at their camps or campus.

Let me clarify. The reason they are talking to me is because I coach a showcase team and I'm playing at their field. They are not talking to me specifically about my son. I never told the coaches we played in front of who my son was. But it did make me feel good when they would talk to me after the game and tell me they thought my kid was a player. At least I know they realized which one he was. They talked to me about general things they look for, and what sometimes helps a player to stand out. Information I gladly delivered to my son. During the fall we played at Limestone, Lenoir-Rhyne, USC-Upstate, Mars Hill, Gardner-Webb, Pfeiffer, Wingate, and High Point. Got rained out at Appalachian. Tried to work a few others in but this being the first year of the league ran out of time. To check out the league go to:http://www.cpfsl.org/viewpage.asp?key=9035 My team is the Carolina Clash. If you click on their logo, then on the next page click on our roster, a page will come up with the players names highlighted. If you click on the players name their own personal page will come up, with details like GPA, SAT, 60 times, .etc. Pretty neat stuff.

As a follow up to this post I wanted to let eveyone know I picked up a copy of Baseball Americas baseball directory. Great book with any contact information you could possibly need. I highly recommend it to anyone in a similar position looking for addresses.

    Thanks for the replies,
