I do have what I think is a fairly valid question about the weekly poll, as I have always found it a bit perplexing.

What do the coaches, do you think, base their opinions on when determining their picks?

Before anyone takes this wrong...this is what I find a bit confounding:

Currently Triton is ranked #1 in 3A, whereas CB Aycock is ranked #5. CB Aycock knocked Triton out of state contention last year...and in the Triton/Aycock conference game last week, Aycock once again defeated Triton 3-1. I would think, given the history, Aycock would rank higher than Triton.

And in the 4A division, I see that Fuquay ranks 7th (formerly 5), yet Harnett Central - who has had one of the strongest softball programs in the state for years - remains undefeated, including against Fuquay, does not even earn honorable mention. For that matter, Cape Fear who has consistently proven Jack Britts undoing over the past couple of years, has once again defeated them in conference play, yet Cape Fear earns only Honorable mention as opposed to Britt's 10th place rating.

Any idea what criteria is given more weight perhaps than other attributes?

I understand your confusion I think.

I believe the coaches who are voting don't have the opportunity to see all the games; especially since they have their own games to attend.

Maybe some will read these kind of posts and consider the information when they are voting.

I also believe that not all teams turn in their scoring and therefore some valuable information is lost. Information that could help in the voting.

I've seen Harnett play several games, including Fuquay, Triton, and West Johnston. There is no doubt whatsoever Harnett should be ranked in the Top 10.

Reporting the results of games to the coaches' association is very important. This may not be as appealing when you lose but it is vital. The polls can only be so good, but with a little help they can be much better.

My suggestion is to do it similar to the tone of this thread--in an adult, non-insulting manner. Everyone enjoys the spirit of sportsmanship; and that applies here as well.

Does Easter/Spring Break have any impact on the polls. Specifically meaning, if you don't play for an entire week could it have a negative impact on a teams ranking? Also, are the polls based solely regular season play or do they also include Easter/Spring Break tournaments as well?

    SSSSSSHHHHHH!!!!!

:rolleyes::rolleyes: Harnett central fans are keeping quiet about polls, rankings, & wins at this time. We are happy to have any good fortune come our way.

As to the polls, you have to accept who submits the votes. Not all coaches do vote, so sometimes results miss some deserving recognition.

Since you strarted with C B Aycock, all I can say is I expect to see them in Raleigh about Memorial day.

    Polls

Here are some answers to your question:

Not all coaches in the State are members of the NCSCA. To vote, you must be a member.

Not all coaches turn in their scores and records to the Association.

The polls commitee tallies up votes and gives their input as to who should be in the Top Ten according to the voting from the previous week.

Poll voting closes on Sunday night at 6 pm. Anything that happens on Monday of the next week will not show up in the polls until the next week.

Poll committee members are located in both the East and the West Regions.

Strength of schedule, strength of Conference, palying ranked teams, defeating a ranked team are ways that teams can move up. Losing generally brings you down in the rankings. You mention CB Aycock and I don't want to get into specifics, but they were ranked #1 for 3 weeks before losing and falling in the polls.

Coaches seem to vote for the traditional powers across the State, if they don't know about a certain team, they will vote for the name and past successes.

This poll this week may have some movement because of some of the losses, hard to say. It just depends on who took the time to vote this week.

    Strength of Schedule

Losing to ranked teams, especially #2 ranked North Davidson in 4A and ranked Eastern Randolph is probably not going to drop you in the rankings at all. In fact, strength of schedule may move you higher, depending on how bad the losses were to these schools.
