    Though not baseball specific, I've always loved this quote.

    My Buttermaker

    I had a coach in Little League all stars who was, um, a bit colorful. Not quite a Buttermaker--he didn't drink beer, or at least not in the dugout-- but his language was classic. It also didn't hurt that he was balding, but had long red hair where it still grew, was about 6-5 and 300 pounds, and wore an eye patch over one eye that he had lost to cancer.

    We had won a couple in a row and were feeling pretty good about ourselves, so coach decided to take us down a peg by explaning how we were lucky to have won the games we had won. His exact words were: "The sun don't shine up the same dog's ass twicet."

    And that "t" on the end of twice is not a typo. I'll never forget that speech. I love a good coach speech.

    one of my favorite coach/player talks came from major league 2. jake taylor is working with rube baker who can't throw the ball back to the pitcher, but can throw ropes to the bases.


    jake taylor: rube, what goes through your mind when you make that throw to second?

    rube: nothing. i just let er' rip.

    jake: you see what i'm getting at?

    rube: you want the pitcher to pitch from second base!?

    Speaking of Major League

    One of the few highlights from Major League 3: Back to the Minors:

    Gus: Rube.let me ask you something? If I asked you to change the oil in my car, could you do it?
    Rube: Um...no, not really.
    Gus: Ok, well if I asked you to build me something from wood, like a boat...you think you could do that?
    Rube: Uh, no I don't think I could do that either.
    Gus: So, it's safe to say your skills lend themselves strictly to baseball, would I be right in saying that?
    Rube: Uh...yeah, I guess you could say that!
    Gus: Good, cause if I ever see you tank another throw again, I'm cutting your ass! So I suggest you start making your throws, or start learning a new skill.

    Rube runs out of the dugout.

    Doc (to Gus): I thought you were going to give him the nice speech.
    Gus: That was the nice speech.
