    Ragsdale 42 Page 21

Well lets hope the flu bug hits Ragsdale every game if this is the way they play. Ragsdale rolled 42-21 in a game that wasn’t that close. Ragsdale dominated every phase of the game tonight playing the best all around game I’ve seen from them in a while.

Game turned on Page’s first possession as Darius McQueen recovered a fumble on the Page 47. It took Ragsdale 7 plays to score on a D’onovan Smith 7 yard run. Page would come right back though driving 80 yards to tie it up late in the first on a short pass from Summers to Collie. Ragsdale next drive would stall across the 50 and Kasey Redfern showed his punting is a weapon too downing a kick at the five. A penalty on Page negated a 3rd down conversion and Ragsdale took advantage of a short field after the punt as Luke Heavner found TE Pete Romer open down the seam for a 15 yard TD pass. Next Page drive stalled and Ragsdale wasted no time marching down field and scoring on another TD pass from Heavner to Desean Anderson from 22 yards out for a 21-7 lead with 3:33 left in the half.

Heavner was money in the first half. 9-10 for 121 yards and two TDs laying every pass right in the hands. Of course his O-line gave him all kinds of time.

Ragsdale broke it open for good on the second half kickoff as Chris Armwood showed his speed as he found the hole in the wall and busted it 99 yards down the middle of the field. Sounds like he may have been fortunate on a blown call as he may have had a foot in the end zone. 28-7 Ragsdale just fifteen seconds in. Ragsdale would score two more times over the next five minutes on a 13 yard Smith TD run with 8:54 left and another beautiful strike from Heavner to Luke Sonricker from 43 yards out with 6:35 in the third.

Ragsdale stopped Page again on the next drive forcing a punt when Page got the dumb luck play of the night. A bad snap led to a rushed squib punt that bounced about fifteen yards downfield hitting a Ragsdale player in the back right at the first down marker where Page recovered. One foot back and Ragsdale takes over – but Page would capitalize scoring on the last play of the third. Page would get one more score in the fourth on a nice 60 yard run by Summers the QB to finish the scoring at 42-21.

Just an awesome game by Ragsdale. Special teams played big. The defense forced an early turnover to get momentum and Heavner played big all night. Thanks in large part to his O-line protection he finished 13-16 for 205 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran well and scrambled out of trouble several times. His receivers continue to come up big. Anderson caught 6 passes for 90 yards and a TD and also ran 36 yards. Sonricker caught four passes for 68 yards and a TD and Pete Romer the TE caught a 15 yard TD pass. Smith ran yard and got yards when he needed them getting around 75 yards on 17 carries and 2 TDs. He also caught a 23 yard pass on a Heavner scramble. Ragdale’s running game hasn’t put up numbers all season to wow anybody but when the game is on the line and they need to move the chains they get it done.

And the defense – outstanding. They took away Page’s running game hat put almost 500 yards last week. If not for that last long TD run they would have had less than 100 on the game. Once again it was a total team effort led by everybody on D. Sparks, Stone, Ellison, Grimes, McQueen, Armwood, McNeil, Jones, Hanford, Swaim, McCoy, Lecompte and others I know I missed. They all deserve credit.

4-0 with a road game at Roxboro Person next week. After that it’s conference time.

well I have no game recap from last week since I didn't go so I'll just post a link to MIke Ellis' excellent story from the Jamestown News. Pretty impressive defense by Ragsdale. Two defensive scores, one goal line stand and only 65 yards in total offense and three first downs given up. 52 of those yards came on one play. Thirteen yards the rest of the way. That's what you call defensive domination.

    half way through the season

Ragsdale is sitting at 6-0 and three or four in most of the polls. I knew they would be good this year but never thought they would be this good.

    Last week's recap and pics:

Ragsdale blows open a sluggish game with 3 TDs in 37 seconds of the second quarter to cruise over Parkland 42-0. Ragsdale came out running the ball getting some nice gains by D-onovan Smith and scored about five minutes into the game on a Luke Heavner 1 yard sneak for a 7-0 lead. Parkland also came out running surprisingly and despite some nice gains never could put a drive together.

Ragsdale wouldn’t score again until 4:19 in the second quarter on a nice 15 yard end around by Desean Anderson. Then the flood gates opened. On Parkland’s first play from scrimmage Daniel McNeil sacked Parkland QB and also drew a grounding call then on the next play recovered a fumble on the 7 yard line, Took Smith one play to score so 27 seconds later it was 21-0. Kasey Redfern who normally booms his kicks for touchbacks was kicking into the wind so he skied his second kick in a row high which was fielded about the time the coverage unit was there resulting in a fumble that was picked up by Darius McQueen around the ten and run in for a TD. Second week in a row McQueen scored on a fumble recovery. So ten seconds later its 28-0 Ragsdale.

Ragsdale would add two more scores. The next was on a beautiful receiver option pass converted by TuTu - Tyquan Roberts. He lofted a beautiful 45 yard pass to a wide open Luke Sonricker for a 35-0 lead 1:46 in the third. Ragsdale would score again early in the fourth on an 11 yard Barry Brown run. The second unit defense then held late to keep the shut out.

Ragsdale only threw it 12 times tonight. Heavner was 9-11 for 82 yards. Desean Anderson caught three for 27 yards and had a TD run. Luke Sonricker caught one pass – the 45 yard TD from Tyquan Roberts. Roberts also caught two passes for 26 yards.

D-onovan Smith was the workhorse tonight carrying 25 times for 142 yards and a score.

Defense once again came up big getting their first shutout of the season. Sad note in he fourth when Parkland #1 (Hairston?) was carted off on a stretcher after a long gain. He was down for a while – hope he’s okay.

Half way through the season Ragsdale now 6-0, 1-0. Up next is East Forsyth at home.

    Ragsdale 31 East Forsyth 0

The Tigers just keep on rolling. The defense is just a killing machine and gives the offense such good field position. And once they get the field position they can score from anywhere. A real special season unfolding for a great coach and a great bunch of kids. Can't wait to see how these guys get up for the big rivalry game at Southwest Guilford.

Pics and recap from last Friday's game :

Ragsdale recorded a second consecutive conference shut out rolling to a 31-0 methodical win over East Forsyth in Jamestown.

Looked like East may be able to move the ball early but Ragsdale put the clamps on D. Ragsdale’s first drive stalled around the ten but Kasey Redfern converted a 28 yard FG for a 3-0 lead 7 ½ minutes into the game. Ragsdale D held again but East got the ball back on a muffed punt. The turnover didn’t hurt Ragsdale though who held and then marched down the field again behind the hard running of D-onovan Smith. Smith had 70 tough yards in the first half on 13 carries. Luke Heavner hooked up with Luke Sonricker on an 11 yard TD at the 7:20 mark of the second, 10-0 Ragsdale. Ragsdale would get the ball back and Desean Anderson would convert a reverse from the ten for a 17-0 half time lead for Ragsdale.

In the second half Ragsdale’s first drive stalled and Redfern punted for the first time of the night. Ragsdale D held again and a nice punt return from Chris Armwood gave Ragsdale a short field from the 32. Ragsdale would have a 12 yard Matt Heavner TD run called back on a holding penalty but would get it down to the one foot line on the next play as Deshawn Shouse held on to an 18 yard Heavner strike. Shouse took a helluva hit as his helmet and ear pad went flying but the junior held onto the ball for his second catch of the year. Heavner snuck it in from a yard out for a 24-0 lead with 5:10 in the third.

Teams would trade possessions into the fourth with Ragsdale scoring one last time on a beautiful 42 yard pass from Heavner to Tyquan Roberts. We wanted TuTu (Tyquan) to see the ball all night and the 6’6” receiver didn’t disappoint hauling in his first TD catch of the year.

Ragsdale D held one more time to preserve the shut out. I left after the last TD with six minutes left. At that point I don’t think East had crossed mid field all night. Just another excellent job by the defense. LB Trey Swaim had a big sack. Trey Grimes made tackle after tackle. This sophomore LB really stands out on a defense full of stand outs. The team D is just so good everybody gets a chance to make plays.

The offense continues to be balanced. JR D-onovan Smith had 104 yards on 21 carries. No TDs but this kid really runs hard between the tackles. Heavner had a big night. One rushing TD, 12-18 169 yards and two TDs. Luke Sonricker caught 4 for 60 yards and a TD. Desean Anderson had his usual big production. Caught 6 passes for 51 yards and rushed 5 times for 36 yards and a TD.

Ragsdale now 7-0, 2-0 with a rivalry game next week at Southwest Guilford.

Here's a nice article in the High Point Enterprise on Ragsdale's kicker - Kasey Redfern. This kid is a neighbor of mine. Great player - great student. He is really making a name for himself this year - for his kickoffs. He doesn't get a chance to kick a lot of FGs but he has made two over 40 yards this year.

His punting is what has really impressed me. He filled in first half of last season and was inconsistent. Some good, some not so good. Regular punter came back and he stopped. This year he is punting full time and you can really tell he worked on it. He booms them HIGH. Lots of fair catches. And he is great on inside the twenty kicks too.

Really hope he can get a D1 ride.

    Ragsdale 35 Southwest Guilford 0

Another great win for the Tigers. Three straight shutouts, two on the road, one against your arch rival is impressive no matter how strong the competition is. Especially when the last two weeks the defense has given up 91 yards (4 first downs) and 31 yards (3 first downs, one due to a pass interference). Unbelievable.

Last weeks game and pics (including the unheralded and underated offensive line) :

Ragsdale rolls to their third consecutive conference shutout beating arch rival SW Guilford on the road 35-0. Another outstanding job by the defense. Probably held yet another team to under 100 yards total offense. SWG never really threatened. They had a first down in the third around the twenty after a long interception return and had one decent run in the fourth that got them inside the 30 but went backwards from there.

The offense wasn’t spectacular tonight but got the job done when they needed to. Kicking game (Redfern with booming kickoffs and punts once again) and the defense gave the offense good field position all night.) First score came on a Luke Heavner one yard sneak but it was D’onovan Smith that did most of the work. Smith would get plenty of yards and two scores in the first half from 6 and 2 yards out. Ragsdale’s last score of the half came after Heavner found Desean Anderson for a 20 yard completion then Anderson ran in from the six for a 28-0 half time lead.

Southwest defense played much better in the second half forcing Ragsdale to punt several times and later picked off Heavner in the end zone (receiver slipped) and ran it back about 70 yards but the Ragsdale D made sure they got nothing for the effort. Ragsdale got their last score after a nice punt return by Chris Armwood gave them a short field and reserve Barry Brown got the call getting the 15 yards in three carries, the last a 1 yard TD run.

SWG offense threatened once late in the fourth but the defense held on a Chris Bailey-Burke interception.

Ragsdale now 8-0, 3-0 with NW Guilford coming to Jamestown next week. The only bad news for Ragsdale tonight was losing outstanding wide receiver Luke Sonricker to a broken arm in the first quarter. Sonricker was having a great season and made a nice one two punch with Desean Anderson. Hopefully Luke will be back during the playoffs if he heals up in time.

unofficial stats I have had Heavner 8-18 for 84 yards and the interception. He also had a TD run.

Desean Anderson had four catches for 40 yards and three carries for 39 yards and a TD. D'onovan Smith had another big game with 155 yards on 27 carries and two TDs. backup Barry Brown did a nice job with 46 yards in six carries and a TD.

High Point paper said the defense held SWG to three first downs. I think East Forsyth had only four last week.

    Domination.

well heck - just realized I didn't post here after the Northwest Guilford game.

Huge game with Glenn coming to Jamestown for senior night. And Ragsdale has a bunch of seniors. Both teams are 4-0 a top the conference.

    as for the last game...

Ragsdale’s defense continued it’s domination of the Piedmont Triad 4A with its fourth straight shut out over NW Guilford 20-0.

However the game didn’t look so great in the first half. NW Guilford’s offense was non existent. And Ragsdale’s wasn’t much better. Untimely penalties, befuddling play calling and poor execution resulted in a scoreless half. Ragsdale had good field position every time they got the ball but missed a FG on its first possession and also on the last possession of the half.

But it didn’t take long for Ragsdale’s offense to get on track. A short kick off, a 15 yard run by D’onovan Smith and a 37 yard TD pass to Desean Anderson made it 7-0 Ragsdale just 41 seconds into the half. Ragsdale D then got a turnover on NWG’s first possession as Avery Washington made a great shoestring interception. It took Smith two carries for 15 and 3 yards for a TD and a 13-0 lead.

Ragsdale would score one more time on the first play of the fourth quarter as Heavner found Tyquan Roberts down the left side line for a 38 yard scoring pass. Heavner only threw two passes in the second half; two completions, two touchdowns.

I didn’t keep many stats tonight. But I do know Smith had another 100 yard game and a TD. Heavner also had over 100 yards passing with the two TDs. But the story of the game and the season continues to be the Ragsdale defense. If Northwest had over 100 yards in offense it wasn’t by much. Their offense never crossed the fifty the whole game. The only time they threatened in the fourth Ragsdale D held them with yet another first and goal stand. NWG faked a FG from the three but the pass was incomplete. And the only reason they were down there was thanks to Ragsdale turning the ball over on a missed fake punt and some bizarre officiating. The refs were pitiful tonight. Way too many obvious calls missed and way too many conferences to figure out why there were so many flags on the ground.

9-0, 4-0 with the all important bye week coming up. These boys have earned the break for sure. Best part for Ragsdale is next week they get to go scout the Glenn-High Point Central game, the other two undefeated teams in the conference and Ragsdale’s next two opponents.

With first place in the conference on the line it was another one of those defensive slobber knockers last week against Glenn. In the first quarter Glenn held Ragsdale to three straight three and outs while Glenn gashed Ragsdale for a big play TD and actually moved into Ragsdale territory two more times in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The rest of the game was all Ragsdale. Ragsdale scored twice in the second quarter to take the lead and held Glenn to less than 100 yards offense over the last three quarters.

On the last night of the regular season a big game at High Point Central. Old rivalry. First place still on the line since a Central win could leave a three way tie for first. Central may have the toughest defense Ragsdale has faced all year. Of course I know that Central hasn’t seen a D like Ragsdale’s either. Should be a great way to end the regular season.

    Glenn recap and pics :

    --------------------------------------------

    Ragsdale 23 Glenn 10
For the only the second time this season and for the first time in over two months, Ragsdale found themselves trailing in the first half but managed to take the lead at the half for the tenth time this season for a hard fought 23-10 win over the Glenn Bobcats. Glenn is the only team other than Page to score more than once on Ragsdale but the defense pitched the shutout in the second half to make sure the halftime lead held up.

Glenn ended the shutout streak early in the game. After Ragsdale went three and out to start, Glenn’s Josh Hawkins gashed the Tiger D on their second play from scrimmage on an 83 yard TD run at 9:42 in the first. The rest of the first quarter was all defense. Both teams moved the ball but couldn’t get into scoring range. Glenn’s 7-0 lead to end the first quarter was the only quarter end this season where Ragsdale trailed.

Ragsdale finally got on the board in the second quarter thanks to some nice running by D’onovan Smith and big catches by Deshawn Shouse and Desean Anderson. Barry Brown took it in from five yards out to tie the game with 8:27 left in the half. Ragsdale D held then the offense took the lead back as Shouse broke several tackles after a short pass and raced 50 yards for the TD. Shouse was filling in for Tyquan Roberts who was out with a concussion and came up big time after time.

Ragsdale gave Glenn a little life late in the half as they went for it on fourth down around the fifty and didn’t covert. Glenn took advantage with under a minute left and no time outs, hitting a big pass down to the ten. It looked like Ragsdale D was going to hold though as Glenn snapped the ball with the clock reading zeros. But the refs gave them one more untimed down due to offsetting penalties. Not sure about that call. I knew a half couldn’t end on a defensive penalty but thought it should end on offsetting. Either way Glenn took advantage of the extra play to kick a FG to cut the lead to 14-10.

Second half was all defense until late. Glenn never threatened again and Ragsdale took advantage on a short punt in the third. Desean Anderson had a nice catch and run that looked like a TD but he stepped out at the ten. The drive stalled however and Kasey Redfern kicked a 30 yard FG with 8:17 in the third for a 17-10 Ragsdale lead. That’s the way the score stayed until Ragsdale punted the ball away late in the fourth - Glenn fumbled the fair catch and Walt Sparks recovered at the ten. Ragsdale got the insurance points as Heavner found TE Pete Romer in the end zone with :56 seconds left. 23-10 the final.

It was fun to finally watch a tight ball game after seven straight blow outs. The defense came through after giving up the big play early. A high powered offense missing two big receivers found another star in Shouse (#14 below) who caught 6 passes for 116 yards and a TD. Heavner had a good night going 14-25 189 yards and two TDs. Anderson caught six passes for 65 yards and D’onovanSmith did his usual hard running between the tackles for 74 yards on 22 carries and another fumble free night. In addition to Sparks’ fumble recovery, Avery Washington had a pick in the first half. Redfern boomed his kicks and punts once again. The defense was led by EVERYBODY once again. Sparks, Billy Stone and Daniel McNeil in particular. And tackle Neil Jones was covered in dirt by games end - you could tell he had been clogging that Glenn line most of the night.

10-0 5-0 with one more big game next week with Central at Simeon Stadium. It will be like another playoff game just like tonight was. Lose and Ragsdale could end up hitting the road in the first round with a 10-1 record. Win and they could get home field throughout. My money will be on the Tigers.
