After nine innings and a pair of rallies, Ragsdale eeked out a run in the top of the ninth inning to beat North Gaston, 5-4 on Thursday, to take a one-game lead in the best-of-three state semifinal series. Game 2 is tonight in Jamestown.

DALLAS -- Just when it appeared North Gaston was about to take a 1-0 series lead, Ragsdale found a way to turn the tables.

The Tigers forced extra innings by scoring two runs in the seventh, then scored the winning run on a ninth-inning error for a 5-4 road win Thursday in Game 1 of the 3-A West regional series.

The best-of-three series now shifts to Jamestown, where Ragsdale (27-2) will host Game 2 tonight at 7. Game 3, if necessary, will take place at 7 Saturday at North Gaston (21-7). The series winner will move on to a state championship series next weekend in Raleigh or Greensboro.

After both teams scored a run in the eighth, Ragsdale finally put the game away when Catlin Carter scored from second on a fielding error by the third baseman, who didn't reach low enough for a grounder. Carter, a junior right-hander, then sealed the win in relief, retiring three North Gaston batters in order while improving to 7-0.

"Good teams with good players are going to make plays, especially kids like both of our teams have that don't have any quit in them," Ragsdale coach Donnie Maness said. "That's obvious from this first game that neither team wants to lose."

Carter pitched the final 12/3 innings in relief of starter Brandon Phelps, who yielded four runs on nine hits, struck out eight and walked none. Jason Wallace and Brandon Phelps had two hits each to lead Ragsdale's 10-hit outing.

The Tigers almost didn't have a chance at extra innings. North Gaston led 3-1 with one out in the top of the seventh when Ragsdale battled back. Phelps knotted the score with a two-run single to deep right field and then kept the Wildcats from answering in the bottom of the inning. The senior right-hander allowed a leadoff single by Seth Black, who eventually reached third with two outs.

But Phelps struck out Kyle Martin to end the threat and send the game to an eighth inning.

"I think that both teams played nervous early. I guess that's to be expected," Maness said.

    W: Carter . L: Clarke.

Leaders: Ragsdale - Jason Wallace 2-for-4, RBI; Brandon Phelps 2-for-5, 2 RBI.

Records: Ragsdale 27-2, North Gaston 21-7

How does the coach from Ragsdale seem to think that North Gaston made plays? I was there and saw 7, yes 7 NG errors. So I don't know how they made plays. HE almost ran his team out of the game with crazy baserunning mistakes.

It was a heck of a game

The fans and players who made the trip to Gaston got home after midnight but here is a short recap:

This Ragsdale Tigers team could be called "The Cardiac Kids" based on the past few games. They were behind 3-1 in the top of the seventh and could have given up and conceded the loss. Instead, they tie the game 3-3 and then hold N. Gaston in the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the 8th, Ragsdale scores another run but this time N. Gaston answers with a two out double with a man on second to make the score 4-4. In the top of the 9th the Tigers score yet another run and this time the Tigers shut out N Gaston in the bottom of the 9th for the win. This win was truely a TEAM win as most,of the players in the line up got a hit tonight.

One other observation. The student body was very vocal at N. Gaston and made many disparaging remarks to the Ragsdale players. Being vocal is great in any sport, but do not make fun of High School players because of their size, the way they look, etc.

Hoping for a great turn out in Jamestown tonight. Game time is 7:00. Get there early if you want a seat.

It's a shame this goes on. I've seen it before and it seems to usually come from fans (students) who show up for one game a year, like when their team makes it deep into the playoffs.

I am from the North Gaston Area and Iam sorry to say we have more than our share of RED NECKS Also N Gaston does not win in many sports and do not know how to handle winning. I apologize for their behavior for they know not what they do

I agree with most on this subject. I've always disliked having fans(usually students) single out a player and make disparaging remarks about him in an attempt to disrupt his game or rattle him. The truth is though, the kids usually take it much better than the parents.

The one thing I've learned these last 2 years is that HS players that intend to play at the next level need to get used to it(parents too) because some college venues can be absolutely brutal. The very worst thing one can do is acknowledge one of these "hecklers" because it only will escalate in intensity.

No truer words are said. You go into some of the SEC venues and it's like an initiation and encouraged by the hometown fans. I remember having chicken bones thrown at me and the sad part was..........they were already eaten.

my take has always been it's okay if the student/fans in the outfield are ragging on the players backs in the outfield - that kind of talk has always been part of the game.

but throwing anything is a no-no. And the parents/adults should save their nasty words for the umpires - the ones with the "anywhere I decide this time it's a strike" strikezone - like the one the ump developed about half way through tonights game:wtf23:
