    Will the realignment happen in '08-'09 or the '09-'10 school year?

    Next season ...

    Here they are, your new Western North Carolina conferences, tentatively. The changes take effect during the 2009-2010 school year, but NCHSAA members will have a chance to appeal before this becomes official.
    Here are a few of the significant changes:
    - Roberson is moving to 4-A. The following schools will also change classifications – East Henderson (2-A to 3-A), Mitchell (2-A to 1-A) Polk County (1-A to 2-A) and West Henderson (2-A to 3-A).
    - Reynolds and McDowell are leaving the Northwestern Conference to join a league with every Buncombe school besides Owen.
    - Pisgah and Tuscola will be together in the same conference.

    this realignment totally destroys the big south 3a/4a. east gaston moves to a 4a conference including south mech and olympic.

    south point and hunter huss move to a conference that takes us a far as anson and the other side of charlotte.

    the rest of the teams (ashbrook, forestview, crest and north gaston) remain in the conference and have kings mtn, burns and rs central added.

    this means that travel cost and travel time will triple for south point, huss and rs central. this is crazy, why didnt they just leave the conference with the removal of the biggest school (east gaston) and add the closest schools, (km and burns)??? rs central will now have an hour+ trip to play three of their competitors. if i'm right, anson is on the other side of albemarle and would be a 2+ hour trip to play two of their competitors.

    in my opinion, someone is definately not thinking hard about this, especially with the price of gas what it is and the length of travel required.

    Draughn HS

    Draughn High School will be opening in the fall of 2008. They will pull approximately 850-1000 students from East Burke in the first year, depending on how they handle junior and senior assignments. Similar to how Patton HS pulled from Freedom this past year. We just hope there's not as much chaos and hoopla!
