Officials do have primary coverage areas of the florr that they are supposed to be officiating. Some officials call out of their area. They do this because they watch the ball all the time or they don't trust their partners. The person on the baseline(Lead Official) has 1/2 the lane and the area inside the 3point line on their side. The person back closest to 1/2 court (Trail Official) has the the areafrom the opposite land line to his side line above the ft line and the area outsside the 3pt line between himself and the lead. The other official (center official) has everything else. Basically everything on his side of the floor.

There are going to be times where we have secondary coverage of areas. We may even have three people on a play if it happens right where all three primary coverage areas meet.

As far as post play. We were told, after we warn the player once for rough play in the post, then get them for a foul. Examples of rough play are: 2 hands in the back, forearm in the back, and knee in the butt.

Guard play and hands. lf the ball handler is dribbling from side to side, we kinda let them get away with haveing their hand on the a little. Once they start going to the basket and that had is put on, it is a foul. 2 hands on the dribbler is a foul everytime.

What alot of people do not understand is that not all contact is a foul. A foul is contact that causes an advantage or disadvantage. If we went by contact, then there would not be any players left at the end of the game. We must decide what contact caused an advantage or disadvantage and then penalize appropriately.

    Hope this helps.

Don't know what stipulations you are talking about. I know that I do not call games that involve the High school that I attended. I "marked" that school off. The booking agent will send you anywhere that you do not have marked off. You will have to start by officiating MS and JV basketball before moving into varsity games, at least in most places.

Like tools said, contact the booking agent and he can put you in contact with the local clinic leaders from your area and I am sure they would welcome you to join them

MTNMan- Where are these places that allow you to move up and call varsity ball immediatly? Maybe I should look at those clinics. :rotflmao:

I know for a fact that all the refs that work Watauga are all first year officials.:cucumber:

I could write a 5-page report on the officiating that we have seen this season in the Asheville area but I'll respectfully decline.

If they are letting inexperienced officials call varsity games, then that explains a lot.

Agreed! This year has really shinned the light on how much better the officiating was in the NW4A in previous years compared to this year in the MAC. A few bad calls here and there are gonna happen but virtually every other time down the court is unacceptable.
