Marvin Ridge 3, South Pointe 4

MR jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and held on until the bottom of the 6th when South Pointe tied it up at 3 on an RBI double by the pitcher Springs. Nothing for MR in the top of the 7th while South Pointe loaded the bases with no outs. Next came a strikeout and then a walk off single.

Praise to MR's #3, he threw great and competed all night. South Pointe LHP Springs struggled in the first and then settled down. The boy can flat out pitch. Nobody on this planet was hitting him after the 3rd. Nice instinctual play on a baserunner stealing home with 2 strikes, two outs. Springs must have felt something going on behind him, stepped off and gunned down the runner at the plate. It was so quick it looked like a balk but wasn't.

A couple errors late hurt Marvin Ridge who seemed to be in control of the game.

Coach Lineberger has that park looking great. Exciting atmosphere last night in Belmont. Game 2 today at Marvin Ridge at 4:30 weather permitting.

Look, only one GUY has any say in the weather and I doubt he has any stake in this series! TC is a class outfit and has earned the right to host their game according the NCHSAA rules. They obviously got screwed last year having to go play 3 away games. When East Meck went up to play them in the first round on a Fri., they also got rained out after the TC coach and parents spent all day getting the field ready to play. TC's response? They fed the East players and coaches while the Principal of TC arranged for the East Team and coaches to spend the night at a Hotel less than 5 mins. from the field at a very discounted rate. Both teams got a good nights sleep and they played early the next day to beat the rain. I take it somebody at SEG made the decision to not do this last night. Wrestlers and swimmers miss school when they travel to their championships every year so there is a precedent. If I was SEG I would charter a bus instead of taking an activity bus and save about 45min to an hour of travel time. If rain forces the game to be played tommorrow; spend the night, play early, both teams get on buses and try to play at least one game at SEG on Sat. That way neither team has a travel advantage. Not an ideal situation, but a fair one.

Hope it all works out as both teams have earned the right to compete for this championship. Let the players decide who moves on. Hopefully adults making the decision where and when to play won't give one team an unfair advantage.

    Good Luck to both teams!

I'm sure irrelevant to a degree, but...

One thing that could be done for the future is have "the state" start first round of playoffs on TUESDAY not a Friday. Play RD 1 and RD 2 first week. Play RD 3 and 4 the next week. That way you have six days between RD 4 and regionals to help work with weather problems more easily. It's crazy the way playoffs start. Many conferences spill there tournaments over into playoff start week just so there is not such a delay before playoffs. In the end, that only benefits two teams in conference finals game.

As for this weekend's weather problems - what's the problem? If they aren't completed until Monday, there will still be 4 days until Finals start Friday June 3.

Again, if RD 4 would have been played a week ago, like my plan above, then teams could have played Regional games as early as Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

Oh - and no snide grin here - but I can't help note that the formerly "screwed" TC folks who were angered about East Forsyth not having a full field tarp last year are "doing the best they can" with similar weather conditions this year. Have they checked on using a full turf field to make sure they get there games in? (Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

Very seriously, it was truly tremendous that they did so well by the East Meck folks. Not many who would have done so much. Hat tipped to TC on that.
