Game of the week in the Mid-Southeastern Conference.

Richmond High School baseball team traveled to Scotland High School on a beautiful May 1st night. In most Raider vs. Scots match up there’s seems to be a controversial play called that gets the crowd all worked up. But on this night, it’s a pitcher’s duel between two very good pitchers. #22 Scotland pitcher, Curt Britt was the game winning pitcher. Curt is just a freshman and has three more years of growing….wow. Richmond’s pitcher (#23 Ricky Holden) was impressive as well but he takes the loss. Between the two pitchers there were only five hits and no batters received more than one hit.
Game time was slotted for 7 p.m.; stands are packed with about 2,000 in attendances including several college scouts. This included Barton College scout and UNC-W scout (Randy Hood). Also, in attendance were two UNC baseball players!
    Team 1- 2- 3- 4- 5- 6- 7 R H E
    Richmond 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0
    Scotland 0 2 1 1 0 0 – 4 3 1

    Winning Pitcher: #22 Curt Britt, 7 innings, 24 Batters, 2 hits, 1 ROE, 1 HB, 6 K’s, 0 runs
    Losing Pitcher: #23 Ricky Holden, 6 innings, 24 batters, 3 hits, 3 BB, 1 HB, 9 K’s, 4 Runs
Batters: Ryan Walker (S) 1-2, HR, HB, RBI, 2 runs, Kevin Norton (S) 1-3, HR, RBI, K, Chase Bullock (S)1-2, 2B RBI, K, Cory Wallace (R) 1-2, Luke Fowler (R)1-2,

    1st inning (Top),
Curt Britt gets the lead off batter to hit into a 6-3, first out to start the game off. Then he strikes out Dillon Davenport for the second out. The Richmond CF, Mike Nichols hits a ground ball to SS. He’s motoring down to 1st in a hurry so Scotland SS rushes the throw and the ball is in the dirt at first. The ball travels to the fence for a TE6. Nichols runs to second. Then the 1st baseman (#24 Sidney) hits a high fly ball to the Scotland right fielder (Travis Walters) for the 3rd out of the inning.
    Bottom of the 1st,
The Richmond pitcher goes through the first three batters for Scotland to end the first inning.
    2nd inning (Top)
Britt settles in and sits down the 5th, 6th and 7th batters for Richmond.
    Bottom of the 2nd,
Scotland catcher, Ryan Walker (Sr-Signed with UNC-P) leads off the second with a line drive home run off the left field scoreboard. This ends up being the game winning hit. Then the Scotland pitcher comes to the plate and draws a walk. The right fielder, Travis Walters lays down a sac bunt. This moved the runner to second base. The second baseman comes to the plate and hit’s a ball over the right fielder’s head for a stand up RBI double but he is thrown out trying to take third. This was the second out of the inning. Then the left fielder (Cody McCure) hits a towering fly ball to right field for the 3rd out of the inning.
    3rd Inning (Top)
The third baseman gets a base hit to right field, to lead off the 3rd. Then #50 the Left fielder laid down a butt to the pitcher (Britt). He was quick off the mound and turned and throws the runner out at second. Jeremy received a FC. Back to the top of the line up and Brent Franklin hits a rocket to the 2nd baseman and the 2nd baseman catches the ball and fires it to the 1st baseman for a double play to end the top of the 3rd.
    Bottom of 3rd,
The center fielder Frances Lloyd hits into a 4-3 for the first out. Then the SS Kevin Norton hits a towering home run over the left field score board. This was a no doubter off the bat. The home run puts Scotland up 3-0. #23 Ricky Holden settles down and strikes out the 2nd and 3rd batters to end the 3rd.
    4th Inning (Top)
Britt strikes out the side; the #2, #3 & #4 batters.
    Bottom of 4th,
The catcher leads off the inning again, this time he reaches base due to getting hit by the pitch. Curt Britt walks again for his second of three on the night. The right fielder strikes out looking for the first out of inning. On two wild pitches the runners move up to 2nd/3rd & home/3rd. Walker lead off the game with the first run of day and then he tops it off with the last run of the day. The 2nd baseman strikes out looking.
    5th Inning (Top),
Britt hits the first batter to put a runner on first. The 6th, 7th & 8th batters hit into a P4, P6 & 4-3 to end the top of the 5th.
    Bottom of 5th,
Ricky settles in again to strike out the side; the #9, #1 & #2 batters.
    6th inning (Top)
    Britt sits down the #9, #1 & #2 batters with a 6-3, 6-3 & a L6 to end the top of 6th.
    Bottom of 6th,
The 1st baseman hits into a 4-3 out. The catcher strikes out swinging, then Britt reaches first for the 3rd time on the night. Then Walters hits into a 5-3, 3rd out to end the 6th.
    7th Inning (Top)
The #3 batter pops out to the 1st baseman. Then the #4 batter strikes out and the #16 Luke Fowler drives a ball up the middle for a single. Then the #23, the pitcher strikes out looking to end the game.

#22 Curt Britt (FR- Scotland) pitched all seven innings and was clocked up to 90 mph. Britt who plays summer ball for the South Canes, is heavily recruited as a Freshman. Britt stands around 6’1”, 220 lbs is a very dominating pitcher. He has a lively fast ball, good curve and even better change up (bottom drops out). Very impressive on the mound, very good form, follow threw is like a veteran.
#23 Ricky Holden (Richmond) (I don’t know if this spelled correctly), was hitting around 86 mph. He has very good movement on the ball and kept the Scotland batters off balance most of the night. He made a couple of mistake to two talented senior kids. This was basically the ball game!
#7 Kevin Norton SS (SR-Scotland) – Norton made six plays on the night with one throwing error. This including handling all three outs in the 6th inning. Kevin stands around 5’11”, 145 lbs, runs the 60 yd in 6.8, I believe is still unsigned. He is very smooth at SS and has strong arm. At bat he has HR power, dishing out 4 or 5 this year. He hit one this night about 380 feet! His brother is an outfielder for the UNC baseball team.
#16 Ryan Walker C (SR-Scotland) – Ryan has signed to play ball at UNC-P next year. UNC-P has been giving a gift….this kid is one of the best catchers in the state. He throws out runners at first about as many times as he does at second. He is around 90% on put outs at second. Believe me no one is attempting any steals against him now. Ryan has the ability to block ever ball; nothing gets by him. At bat tonight, Ryan was 1-2, HR, HB, 2 runs, K. Ryan has home run power but sometimes he’s a little long with swing and tends to strike out. Hopefully, he will figure this out soon.
#6 Dillon Davenport SS (Richmond) struggled tonight at the bat; he was 0-3, 2K & L6. Dillon only had one play tonight and he made that with no problem at all.

    Curt Britt

is the son of the HC at Scotland High and is a great kid. He is going to be a good one. He must have taken a huge jump in velo if someone clocked him up to 90 though. Reports I have been getting have him in the low 80's.

Not sure I've ever heard of a freshman throwing 90 either. Superwright, what's Britt's pitching record this year? He is bound to be just about spotless if he's throwing like that. It will be fun to watch the scouts flock around there for a few years.

    Curt

I didn't see the gun but he was throwing it pretty good. Curt was hurt earlier in the year so he is just now hitting his stride. He is an "older" freshman. Not to mention he is a great kid. Scotland has played hard this year and should make some noise in the playoffs. Richmond has slowly and painfully been on a slide the past several weeks. But if they can get into the playoffs they may surprise a team or two.

Yes, the scouts are and will flock around this kid until he committs and then it will be the pros. He has already been offered over 50% from a major SEC team. Coach27, your reports are off a little. He was 86-87 last summer but on this night he was pitching against the hated Arch-Rivals, Richmond Raiders; he was pumped! His technique is way better than it was last summer as well. I was very impressed and everyone else was as well!

Coach27, I'm not sure if he will pitch Tuesday or not but Scotland travels to Hoke County. The Womack kid from Hoke pitched a no-hitter against Scotland last outing and he is scheduled to pitch again. Britt didn't pitch the last meeting but this game will be for 1st place in the MSEC. So, I'm betting that Britt will pitch.
Ronald Womack was 87 mph in first inning and then dropped out to 85-86 for the next four innings. I stopped radaring him at that point. My understanding, UNC-G coach had him at 88 mph. He's a left hander and his hammer was unhittable on that night; I clocked it out 72-74 mph.

So, if you want to see another pitchers duel, then show up at Hoke High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and this might be the game of the year if Britt pitches. If Ryan Pierce pitches then this should be a pretty good match up as well. Last time he took the loss but since that outing he has been lights out!

Note: I'm sure Britt will continue to improve but I don't know how much because he is already a intimidating sight on the mound. His mechanics are too good at this point....I didn't see any flaws on the night but he might have some that will allow him to improve.

Oh yeah, Coach May if you bring SouthernNo1 hopefully he can bring some peanuts because I don't know if Hoke High School will have any.

I agree with Coach 27, Curt is a great kid and will be a good one but my son played with him last summer and unless his velocity has really jumped he was throwing 82-84 all last summer.

if you can find out the next time Curt is scheduled to pitch I would love to be there for that one. And I am sure I can get Southern to come along and bring plenty of peanuts!

I can put this to rest. I have had a gun on him recently and have had him as high as 91.. His channge-up is 80, and is off speed pitches are in the low 80's. This kid has it all. He works his tail off, and he has grown up around good baseball his whole life. He wont start tomorow, but he may come in the game to close if its close late. Man that pitching staff for the Canes South this summer is pretty solid out of the Mid-Southeastern Conference alone they have Maples who has been up to 92, Holden who has been up to 90, Britt who has been up to 91, and I hear the Womack Kid has recently committed to the Canes, and he may be the best pitcher in NC. Mix those arms up with the best they have from VA, and that will be tuff times for the opposition!

Thanks Yearroundbaseball, finally someone believes me.....I'm telling you, this kid was way better than he was this past summer. On Friday night this kid had the best follow through of any kid that I have ever seen in high school. He has top of the line stuff that every college coach will want in the future. IMO, he needs to stop playing football though! That's why he was hurt early in season due to football injuries. Like I said, It's my Opinion!

Super I am friends with the Britt family, and I have a decent idea that Curt wont be playing football anymore. I am hearing that he will spend the fall with the Canes on the weekends, and working out with his dad during the week on the field, and in the weight room over the next 3 years to get better on the baseball field. This kid is a work horse, and in my opinion has a chance to be a bumgardner type player if he keeps progressing obviously he isnt a left hander, but I would venture to say that he has the body, work ethic, and is around the right people just enough to take his career to extreme heights.
