Exactly, and I know some people will disagree with this statement, but IMO the reason most rules are bent is to "help" people, not hurt them.

The timing of the HS playoffs and if your legion team has a HS team go far in the playoffs,,, will make this rule tough to deal with. Which is why I think they have always "bent" a little with a later deadline for rosters in the past. Can't do that now.

I want to clarify a couple things in case I stepped on some toes. I tried to pick a county as an example and didn't realize that it would be seen as the Rowan Co the team. Duh, huh on me!! No disrespect to any of the teams mentioned. Just trying to get across that a legion team that could pick and choose schools as opposed to teams so close together that the schools are predetermined should definitely improve their talent pool. That is what happens in some areas with fewer teams. Look at SE Region current enrollment of senior teams: Alabama(3), Georgia(10), Florida(15), Puerto Rico(8), SC(41), VA(68) & NC(63). There is a reason that the Alabama team travels to NC to play regular season games. They come play the perennial powerhouses to get ready for the regionals. There will end up being more teams, but it's still a pretty good chance they are going to make it out of around 8 teams. Tuscaloosa has won the state tournament 7 out of the last 10 years. Kernersville was the only first timers at the Regionals last year. It was old hat for the others, they are accustomed to being there. Most are a travel team out of necessity because there is nobody close by to play.

Computer registration is the reason for the enforcement of the 18 man roster. IP addresses and date\time stamps are much easier to track than postmarked dates. Add the lattitude to pull junior players to cover games so we don't lose days to play, and I think the rule is a good thing. Without that and I think we lose some teams. There has to be a better way. How can a rule set up a situation that a team that follows the rules be forced to forfeit games or break pitching rules by playing so many games in such a short time.

Does this rule affect Jr. Legion teams as well, or are they subject to the same rules as last year?

Yes, it does effect Juniors, also there is no releases to other teams in Juniors.

Don't worry any longer about the roster rule for now. It's back to June 23rd for this year, but expect a kinder, gentler form in 2012. Sure this is welcome news for a lot of programs.
