In this case, it was not an appeal play, but the runner left the bag before the catch and kept going. The defense eventually threw it to second and she was called out (3rd out) and the run did not count. Is that wrong call??

    My take...

When the runner from 2nd was deemed to have left early, she technically did not tag up, so once the ball was thrown to 2nd, as long as it was never ruled dead, she was out by force as no tag had to be applied, and therefore it would not be a timing play, she is the third out and the run does not count.

Is she technically out when she fails to tag up or when the ball reaches second base for the out?

What if there was confusion(no appeal) and the defensive players throw the ball around trying to tag her, the third base runner scores, then they throw the ball to second to "force" the out because of no tag up. The runner scores during the ensuing confusion which not part of the original play of the caught ball.

    Live Ball v. Dead Ball

This is the right answer to a great question. It all comes down to how the 3rd out was obtained. A LIVE BALL throw to 2nd resulting in an out may not be considered a force play but that throw to 2nd DURING a play constitutes out # 3 and should score no run for the offense. There might be an argument in the appeal process when there is a DEAD BALL that might result in no run. I don't know the specifics on this ruling but I'll add to the discussion this. 2 outs, runner on 3rd, batter K's but catcher drops ball, say batter fiddle faddles down to 1st, runner at 3rd scores on the throw from home to 1st. If the batter is out, no run, if the batter is safe, run scores. Does it matter in this type case if the run scores before the batter is officially out? Look for my new thread.
