Iknow about legion, junior legion, HS, and TB. A good friends son played at NCSU (Doak Field) night before last. My DD was at the game and she told me that each team consisted of players exclusively from their HS team. I'm all for playing every chance possible. Can TBR give us some info? Thanks

This is another option for those that are not wanting to go the showcase route. There are certainly advantages to this kind of league. Although I'm still on the fence about it's success statewide, I love the concept. It will be very interesting to watch the future expansion of a HS summer league.

I hope that Spacedawg can give us some feedback about this summer's participation and his opinion of the future success. I guess my initial question would be how fragmented is the talent with competing Legion and showcase teams or is the area not affected by other summer leagues?

As a father of a CCSSL participant, I have observed that some programs and players are very committed to the league while others are not. The majority of the games are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to have weekends free and allow participation on other teams such as showcase. Obviously, not all showcases are held on weekends so some players (and parents) are forced to choose between their school team and the opportunity to be seen by scouts or college coaches. Like many things in life, you will get out of it what you put into it.

    agreed . . .

Son plays in this league as well. The competition is not 4-A regular season competition and the pitching leaves much to be desired; many of the top pitchers are doing showcases/legion/travel ball and rest during the week. Also, teams usually are using this time to get their "raw" or inexperienced pitchers mound time. Most of the part-time players on spring varsity do find the opportunity to get some plate appearances (but given the pitching, not sure how much this helps). Most position players are around and the defense is usually solid for these teams and fun to watch. However, the big hitters are generally not around (showcase/travel ball) for all the games, but do make appearances here and there during the season. Overall, the situation is such that there are some decent games with great pitching and great defense and some timely hitting (a good night), or usually it is a long and boring game with a lot of walks and hit batsman, few strikes, some decent hits. So, generally, it is still new and therefore inconsistent.

Personally, I don't like it. It isn't fun to watch. But, given the schedule (m,t,th), son still has weekend for some travel ball. Coach's son is understanding of the weekend stuff, so doesn't really get upset if they miss games here or there.

    Understand The Purpose!

This league was started to allow high school coaches to work, and most importantly, develop the kids that will make up their team in the coming year. It is a much better option for a rising soph. or junior (and a few rising freshmen) than to play on a "daddyball" travel team or a jr. legion team (if one is even available) that is made up of kids from several schools where some of the players seem to get the short end of the stick because they're not from a certain school(s). Remember, this is about developing the high school team. Even though, these days, more and more of the scouting by colleges and pros is happening at showcases and showcase tournaments, a kid's high school coach is still going to have some influance on his move to the next level. Also the fact is that there are just a very limited number of players on a high school team that are talented enough for showcase ball. With the schedule the scholastic league plays, these few players can do both!
There is time for showcases for the more talented/advanced players. The league even had a couple of showcases last year where a coach could pick a few of his better players to attend. They also got to play a game at NC State which is fun for all the players.
As far as the competition level goes, it is varied no doubt. There are 1-A through 4-A teams involved, and some programs are more committed than others. In the end it's kind of like most conferences, some strong, some weak. Where the results will really show will be next spring. That's when the teams that took advantage of this opportunity for coaches and players to work and develop togather have a chance to shine in their respective conferences and in the playoffs.

if you think your local hs baseball coach knows more baseball than anyone in your community you're deluding yourself. there are plenty of people who played pro ball or even college ball and arenot school teachers who have forgotten more baseball than many hs coaches have. don't sell the men who coach summer ball short
