Well said, many players may not get the time (regular season). How many can take the field at one time? How many of these games count (regular season)? You may see some of the programs that lack that stud player(s) have more success. As far as comparing it to legion. Again, this is about most of the players are from the same school or district. If they are playing it can only help.:clover:

Thomasmagnum... you are right about some of the high school coaches out there. There are some that just do a good job of keeping the grass cut and the lines marked. On the otherhand, there are many many coaches that are excelent teachers of the game and are highly respected by the college and pro guys.
The thing to remember is that at some point, if you have the ability, talent and determination to play beyond high school, those scouts and/or college coaches will more than likely talk with your high school coach to learn more about you. High school ball is just one of the required steps you must take to get to the next level. AAU, USSSA, or any other type of travel ball really just gets you ready for high school ball. Showcase ball is where a very few talented, mostly rising seniors and juniors, can market themselves to the college coaches and pro scouts. But again, this only for a few guys from a high school team.
These days there are plenty of opportunities to work with knowledgable instructors who give private lessons to players that want to improve. That is where you can improve on specific aspects of your game. The summer league is where you can develop as part of a program that, for better or worse, you will be playing in for four years.

East... I'd say it's somewhat below jr. legion overall. But these days, most jr. legion teams are made up of players from more than one school therefor you have a number of kids not selected from each school. There are a number of teams in the summer league that don't have an option of playing legion due to the fact that there isn't a legion program available. I believe that was part of the reason the league was developed by coaches like Milton Sentor (Fuquay) and Charley Spivey (Lee Co.). It really gives more kids the chance to play and develop their games during the summer months.

    Understanding the Purpose

I understand the purpose of the league. I think it is a good idea. I wasn't trying to discredit it, but only trying to describe what the league is like to someone who doesn't know anything about the league. As you say, it does benefit the school team.

It is just that I (me personally) don't like these games as a spectator.

I will add that I don't think it really hurts the legion programs. In fact, in the triangle area, it may make legion better as, given the hs league, legion now draws some college bound players and D-II/III players in addition the better high school players. The downside is that there may be fewer legion teams in an area overall (i.e., in the entire Area I region), but the remaining teams may be better in overall quality. Legion ball, however, may have to adjust its rules to accommodate these changes (e.g., defining a team's area and how the high school's size is included in the definition).

I do think that both can coexist, at least in this area, as the high school league and legion have been doing so for two years now. It may be different for other less densely populated areas, however.

my point is why don't we go back to playing summer ball on our local teams? there are plenty of fine men and very capable coaches out there. hs baseball coaches have for some reason become "gods" as they now have the power of pt over kids whose parent have so much invested and cannot allow their son toget on the coaches bad side.these are hs baseball coaches folks that's all yet i see people doing everything including building the coach a new deck to get theri kid ahead. the quality of play in the summer hs stuff i have seen and heard about everywhere is bad. there is nothing to play for and no where to advance to. btw at the school where my neighbors kid plays the coaches have these kids practically year round. they start in feb then have the summer team and the fall team and then off season winter workouts. no other sport does this that i know of except maybe wrestling.i know kids who have never played football and are now in hs and are playing football now because they say they have to get away from baseball and foorball is the only way they can do it.

The Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League held its annual showcase at Triton High School on Saturday. First, let me say Triton's facility was very impressive. Six "All-Star" teams picked from each division participated. There were a few college coaches in attendance. Coach Osborne from Wingate worked the watch, gun and clipboard nonstop. Many of the pitchers threw on the 80-84 range. A couple pitched at 85+. Fuquay's lefthander looked very good. Most of the talent would have been at the small DI, DII or DIII range. Those college coaches that did not attend may have missed out on some players.

Fuquay was loaded with 11 talented, rising seniors. They hit the ball and pitch very well. Cameron Conner is a very tough out. Milton Senter and Tom Hayes are two fine coaches also. Congratulations Fuquay.

Well Spacedawg, it looks like you got your boys at Orange looking pretty good, also. I expect to see your guys deep into the playoffs this coming year.

BTW, it appears Fuquay is re-loading
