I hate when people use the "beach trip" excuse. This has been floating around for it seems 3 weeks now. If the coaches and managers allow kids to go to the beach, while some other kid who would be more committed plays Jr. Legion or is sitting at home, then the team and its supporters need to deal with it, without using it as a crutch.

There are plenty of teams who do not allow their players to go on beach trips. The players know this upfront and honor the commitment to the team.

travis, in all fairness to the SENIORS who have worked hard in school for 12 years to graduate, btw I'm assuming graduating seniors are the ONLY ones allowed to take vacations during legion seasons. Anyway, there is one school of thought that says they "deserve" the beach getaway.

On the other hand, I "DO" agree with you that there are still some coaches, just like back in my day, when the coach said a committment to play legion ball was a COMMITTMENT TO PLAY LEGION BALL. The beach will be there the rest of your life.

Maybe jealousy on my part, but I never got to go to the beach over Spring Break, graduation, anything. I don't regret it at all. I remember in 1995 at the high school state championship between East Rowan and Asheboro, in which East swept 8-0 and 8-0, the Asheboro fans had the audacity to say that the result would have been different if their seniors hadn't gone to the beach.

tj, I don't believe anyone on TBR was around during "Your days"...but I read about it in Abner Doubleday's autobiography. Chapter 5, page 2 "baseball players do not go to the beach during baseball season; in fear of getting sunburnt and not being able to play"

I'm curious: Is this post in reference to my comment about kids being gone from Post 8/Lex? If so, I object. Grubb is on a Church Mission trip. Levi (& often Briggs) miss games for Showcase. All of this was agreed upon before the season began by Coach Griffin.

Lex has depth, so NO EXCUSE was offered by me or anyone else. Kannapolis won & deserve credit.

Let me add: my son has played 3 varsity sports for 4 years in high school, 2 years of college & 4 years of Legion & never missed a game or practice. So I agree in principle. But times are a-changin' with travelball/showcase. Legion has to adjust or self-destruct.

No disrespect intended at all. My point was that kids missing games because of a beach trip is inexcusable in my opinion. There is nothing going on at the beach that is of any benefit to any of these guys. Everything that happens there can wait for a few months until they go to college. Mission trips are obviously different. If a coach agrees to let a kid go, then that is a different ball game. Showcases as well.

The way Legion baseball defends itself against showcases is that Areas schedule publicized tourneys for certain weekends so scouts come out and watch. They should have skill showcases, homerun derbies, plus all the games that would be included in the tournament.

Missing legion games for beach trips is an item that is most certainly open for debate. However, going on a mission trip is a very honorable reason to miss a legion baseball game. Alex Grubb---I salute you! You are a fine young man. :clapclap:

Rowan defeated Lexington tonight 12-7. Lexington jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but Rowan flipped the switch beginning in the fifth inning scoring 11 unanswered runs thru out the rest of the game.

Rowan starter Cy Young was all over the place issuing 5 walks in 3 2/3 innings. Young gave up 7 hits, 6 runs, while striking out 4. Lee Dupree replaced Young in the 4th inning and was super. Dupree gave up a homer to the first batter he faced, but that was it. Dupree struck out 12 Lexington batters in 5 1/3 innings including the sides in the 8th and 9th to finish the game.

Micah Jarrett, Jason Ridenhour, and Weston Church all had 3 hits for Rowan. Church had the go ahead 3 run home run in the 8th.
