Let the Wars Begin: Key Conference Matchups - Week #3

    Key Meca 8 Matchups

If it's possible for the very first conference game of the season to be meaningful, the head-to-head between the Hopewell Titans and the North Meck Vikings has all of the marks.

Both teams have shown early season promise, NM with a tight squeeze past South Meck and Hopewell with a nice victory over East Meck after a "come from behind" loss to Myers Park. Hopewell could establish and claim dominance in the conference or the young North Meck squad could show Hopewell that they are in a dog-fight this year.

The match-up looks good also. Hopewell will be starting USC Signee Andrew Cruse (Senior) who pitched well against East Meck. He has all of the pitches and the experience. North Meck will be starting sophomore Tom Porter. Going into Fridays matchup with Butler, NM was the only team in the conference with no losses this season. Hopewell is a senior laden team who starts 7 seniors and 2 juniors. North Meck is much younger, routinely playing playing 4 sophs and a freshman. On paper, the match up appears to favor Hopewell tremendously, so they may be tight coming to North Mecks home turf. This should be a well-attended game.

    West Meck versus Independence

Both schools may be just below the contender level this season with the strength of Hopewell at the top of the conference. But both schools are definite contenders for the last play-off spot in the conference this year. The Meca8 only has 3 spots this year so the fighting will be fierce for the last spot.

Independence is a young program, who historically has had a good feeder system. West Meck has opened the season slowly also, but routinely fields solid players. Independence had the misfortune of starting out with Providence & Butler, both contenders in the SW4A. Those strong teams in non-conference play may prepare them well for the beginning of the conference season. West Meck has the most game experience, playing 4 games in a rain-shortened early season so far, facing tough opponents in South Meck & East Meck from the SW4A.

This tuesday should be a good indication for both squads on how the year will go. Friday's scores will be watched closely to see if any trends are developing, going into next tuesdays matchup.

With some area college spring breaks, many of North's alumni will be attending the match up b/w Nm and Hopewell. So watch out for the advantage of the fans goin to North. Good Luck to coach King and the gang. Once a Viking always a Viking.

    Memories---posts from the past

I thought I would copy some posts made before the season and see how they play out now:...some are good prognasticators and some are swags...but only Dr. Methusda was 100%

Just to try to keep things in perspective here:

As much as I agree that Providence is a talented team...probably the most talented, overall, in the SW4A...it's very difficult for me to see them holding their own talent-wise against the likes of Fuquay-Varina, Greenville Rose, and, perhaps, Garner. That's not to say that Providence or whichever team comes out on top of the melee that will be the SW4A season couldn't give one of those other teams a run for their money; but, to say that they're at the same level talent-wise seems like a real stretch to me.
