It's Coach Mark King - He is in his second year at North but he came from Southpoint where he was the Varsity Assistant. He is in his 9th year of High School baseball.

All 4 pitchers in the game looked very, VERY good.

Worrell (05) started for SM and went 4 strong innings, getting touched for one early 1st inning run...He settled right in and was very tough through 4 innings of work. Vartanian (03) was the 2nd guy out. It was the same, 1 quick run in the 5th when he started and then a very solid performance. The two SM pitchers limited north to 5 hits over 7 innings. Porter (05) went 5 2/3 .. strong through 5 and then started to fade in the 6th when he gave up a run. Sam Pierce (05) was the reliever, who worked quickly to 4 batters, ending the game.

With all of the tension surrounding the opening game of the season, everyone on the mound looked composed. It's going to be good seasons for both teams.

If this game was played later in the year, the strong hitting for South Meck would have been more of a factor. That is a very scarry line-up to face. They managed 2 hits off Porter but put the ball in play all night: a very threatening team.

For an early season game in the cold - both defenses looked very good. Kyle Shelton (04) at 3B for SM and Tristan Hollar (04) in RF for NM had particularly outstanding games with the glove.

Offense centered around: Robinson (03) for SM who got both of their hits going 2-3 with a 2B & an RBI. Cavasinni (05) went 2-3 and Nossel (03) went 2-3 with an RBI for NM.

Hey oldguy ... about NM vs SM

The players that no one has noticed or mentioned about that game probably had the greatest impact on it's outcome but both remained completely invisible. I thought both catchers were very good - neither one came into play - no passed balls, good blocking. On the one stolen base in the game: you could have been godzilla and not thrown that runner out - he had a great jump and was very fast. When a catcher does his job, no one notices him.

Robert Proffitt was behind the plate for NM. He did a great job of blocking and framed very well all night long. Pretty good for a Freshman...completely invisible, the sign of a great one.

Bart Johnson was behind the plate for SM on 2/25. He did a great job of blocking and framing as well. Bart is a senior at SM this year.

We've talked about the impact that Isaac Harrow & Wil Boyd will have up there in Hickory...great underclassmen. That program is secure for the near future.

I always have to go look up how to spell "Isaac" ... could you get him to change his name or adopt a nickname for me?:D
