    Wednesday's Results

    Albemarle 4, S. Stanly 2 (Brad Holt 1-1)
Charlotte Catholic 7 Charlotte Latin 2 (Van Popering 2-0)
Garinger 12, Highland Tech 2 (9 Run 7th For Garinger)
Independence 7, E. Meck 3 (Wp: Bray, Sv: Bray - gonna be common)
Olympic 8, West Mecklenburg 6 (Both dangerous teams)
Providence Day 4, East Gaston 0 (WP: Batson)
    South Mecklenburg 10, Hopewell 5 (5-5 After 7 Innings)

    From farther east:
    Seventy-First 2, E.E. Smith 1
Cape Fear 3, Jack Britt 2
Purnell Swett 13, Hoke County 6
Pine Forest 5, Wilmington Laney 0

    Now for the surprises:
    Lumberton 6, Scotland County 0
This was the matchup between the top Two Rivers team versus the Top Midsoutheastern team. Scotland was supposed to have the edge.

Richmond County 6, Wilmington Hoggard 5
With Hoggard's depth, they are expected to be a power this season. Richmond County is good, but expected to end behind Scotland. This was the third (surprising) loss for a very good Hoggard team.

I got out to see the last 2 and a half innings of this one and was impressed with a lot of what I saw. Two key half innngs made a huge difference in what was a 3-2 game going into the 7th.

First, East loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 5th on a single and two great bunts and seemed sure to at least tie the score. But then Robbie Bray was special, getting a strike out and two pop ups to preserve the 3-2 lead.

And in the top of the 7th, clinging to the 1 run lead, Independence loaded the bases with one out on an error and a couple bunt hits themselves. But the Patriots capitalized, with both Evan Taylor and Schaylor (apologize if I butchered the name) coming through, with a two rbi single by Taylor and a two rbi double by Schaylor.

In the 2 and a half innings I saw six great bunts laid down, three by each team. Getting the little things done like that will serve both these teams well as they move into conference play.

I didn't see any of Brett Alter's five innings pitching, but the fact that he gave up just 3 runs on 9 hits says to me that he was throwing strikes and keeping his composure. Sutigers or DCD, any report on how Brett looked?

One more thing I meant to add. East's Ross Davidson (I think that's the right name) made a diving catch on a long, well hit deep fly, running to his right away from the plate. The catch was spectacular.
