I didn't see the end of the game, but was there through 7 innings. The play in question was blocked from view by the visiting dugout from where I was standing.

Both teams looked very strong. Both teams also looked to have some holes that they will plug shortly. Not all of the play was stellar, but most of it was. Morris & Harper, the two starting pitchers, worked their butts off. I was impressed with both of them. The two IF's are very strong.

    Piedmont 1 Anson 0

wolfpac, there is very little else to say. Tim King (2-0) was fantastic. He gave up only 2 singles. His only trouble was once he got two outs in the 7th he walked the next three. He settled down to strike out #17. He has always had a great curve ball but he has added some mph to the fastball.

The bats for Piedmont (3-0) did not show up at all. Piedmont got only 4 hits with leadoff man Jeff Logan getting 2 singles. Piemont's lone run came in the 6th. Rob Lyerly lead off with a single and Danny Hermann hit a wicked grounder to SS who side-stepped it for an error. Then the LF misplayed the ball which allowed Lyerly to score.

Anson played a very good game. They seemed to be very well coached. I wish I would have gotten the starting pitcher's name (#25). He did a really good job of keeping Piedmont off balance. He only struck out two but he only walked two. The only errors that Anson had were on the one play that Piedmont scored their run.

Piedmont plays @ Forest Hills at 4:30. Bryan Parker will be the starter.

    South Meck V Hopewell

    "gbacks21
Watched a very exciting and tense game tonight between two excellent teams. The game went into the 8th tied 5-5. Brandon Harper (Hopewell) pitched his heart out and Ryan Morris (South Meck) pitched great but was undermined by some sloppy play in the field. Hopewell self-destructed in the field in the eighth and when I left South Meck had a commanding 10-5 lead. If this is the type game we are going to see in the County this year, it is going to be a fanastic season. If they can find some pitching, Hopewell will definitely be a contender. It was good to see South Meck look almost human, but great teams always find a way to win and South Meck did!! "

Hopewell does having pitching - just doesn't have the depth that alot of the other teams have - didn't view it as South Meck having "sloppy play" under Morris' strong pitching - SM had two errors - Hopewell had the "sloppy play" - they had 7 errors - four of them in the 8th inning - which does indeed result in self-destruction. The final score was not indicative of how close the score was - for South Meck, a breathed sigh of relief to escape with the victory - for Hopewell, a heart-breaker, considering they had a big chance to win it the 7th with a break here or there.

What happened was, the game was tied 5-5 with the winning run on second and one out, Oliver hit a long fly/liner to right field, the right fielder dove flat out for it, it hit in his glove but the ball poped out behind him as he hit the ground. The field ump was out of position on the play and called it a catch but from the slightly elavated hill behind the backstop, you could see the ball on the ground before the fielder picked it up.

The runner at second could have easily scored if the ump had called the ball in play immediately. The umps conferred but neither had a good view and the call stayed with the runner having advanced to third but now two outs. The next batter K'd. The rest is history. Some miscue's by Hopewell and timely hits by South and the game was over. Hopewell did try to rally in the bottom of the 8th but ended up with 2 on base.

    DB,

Brett Alter threw very well for East against an excellent offensive team. He tired in the 5th, but pitched out of a bases loaded jam allowing only one run that inning. Independence makes it very tough, due in large part to Daniel Cooke. Excellent hitter that can bunt and steals bases at will. He was very disruptive, 3 runs and 2 sb along with a triple. Trey Starnes was impressive in the 2 spot, hitting to all fields. Ross Davidson was the centerfielder that made the great catch and he has consistently done that this year for East.

Mooresville has lost Sr. P/3B Matt Skidmore for at least a month due to a fractured wrist sustained during a basketball game in PE class at school. I know that coaches across the state are pulling their hair out because of incidents like this, totally preventable and devastating to their teams efforts. This is gonna hurt.
