    a quote from the article:

"Mostly, I think travel baseball teams are a very expensive ego trip for parents."

It's definitely sad to see once proud legion programs losing players to travel ball. I really do not like it at all and he hit the nail on the head when he said it is an expensive ego trip for parents.

Wayne County lost two this season. Jerry Narron, former Reds manager, decided his son was too good for us. Then another father didn't like the coach, so they both went elsewhere.

To be blunt, we don't miss Narron's son in the least, as someone who was cut last year is doing an outstanding job. Now the other boy is an outfielder, and we did have a place for him.

I can't speak much about that setup, having never been around it. I would like to see an article detailing how someone manages a travel team. In other words, people are paying a lot of money to play, so how is the time divided? What kind of relationship does the coach have with the parents? Is anyone guaranteed a certain amount of playing time?

Usually, your amount of play depends on how much you can help the team. Winning matters. In travel ball, could you be happy if your team won and you struck out three times? More important, could Dad be happy with his high-dollar investment?

American Legion baseball IS summer ball.

You can't slice it any other way. Play your showcase ball on the weekends during the fall. Don't kill American Legion baseball, Respect it.

My son played on one the best travel teams in NC last year. He was very good and has a lot of schools in contact with him, but he said he never bonded with the players, since he just saw them on the weekends. He was not having fun. This year he is playing legion ball (senior) and loves it! I know some of the parents on the travel team are voicing the same about their sons. This is no reflection on the travel team coaches, but it is what it is. Good grief is it ever expensive!! Just my thoughts.

Not to fuel yet another debate over travel ball vs. legion ball, because I strongly believe there is a way for kids to do both travel ball AND legion baseball. But Birdhunter I could share stories after stories about numerous specific players who have voiced the same opinion with me over the recent years, kids that have done both.

Copied & Posted from an email sent to me today from a parent:

With that in mind, it has been a great program to be involved with, he definitely thought it helped his game and was more fun than playing showcases. He mostly liked getting to know the kids from other schools - this year especially we had some fantastic kids.
