    Shelby vs. Asheville

Shelby Post 82 improves to 26-10 and extended their 11 game winning streak after a double header sweep of Asheville Saturday. Shelby won 3-0 and 10-0.

    Thursday, July 3:
    Pitt Co. 39........... 5
    Wilson................. 2

Wilson turned 4 double plays but couldn't overcome 4 errors. Post 13 tries to snap its first losing streak of the season Saturday night vs. Benson, then close the regular season Sunday at Pitt 160. Wilson (16-5) opens the playoffs Thursday at home vs. either New Bern (if Kinston tops Wayne Co. on Sunday) or Pitt 39 (if Wayne Co. wins).

Saturday's Wilson vs. Benson game is rained out. Wilson's regular-season finale is Sunday at Pitt 160. Area I playoffs start Thursday.

To borrow from John Lennon: NO, NO, NO you're wrong.

Brackets in the American Legion playoffs, as in many other sports, are based on facts. If Kinston wins tonight, it's number one. If Kinston loses, there is a tie and Wayne gets first based on record in the group.

In the NCAA basketball tournament and at Wimbledon, to name just two, people actually get in a room and decide who is placed as a number one, number two, etc. There is judgment involved.

The only judgment involved here is in what tiebreakers to use.

    The tiebreakers are:
    1. Head to head
    2. Run differential
    3. Run differential in the league/division
    4. Coin flip

I realize that I am fighting a losing battle on the use of the word, as I have had this argument several times each March. But again, no one says that the second place team in Durham's division/conference is better than the first place team in the other half and should get a top spot. This is not the NCAA. Judgment is not in play here.

Pitt County Post 160 has a 1-7 record in our half of Area I East. They're out of the playoffs as the fifth-place team. No one "seeded" them fifth.

If Kinston wins tonight, it's in fist. Nobody "seeded" them there. They put them selves there. No committee did it.

The only bracketing was that the authorities decided that the North and South would play each other in the first round. That does not have anything to do with seeding. To say that a team was "seeded" is to use the passive form of the verb. It means something was done to the team.

Durham came in first, did it not? A committee did not put it there. Comprende?

    Roxboro 2

Durham wraps up the TOP SEED on their side of Area I West with a solid win against Roxboro. Durham finishes the regular season 13-8 overall and 6-2 in conference.
