If you guys have been around athletics as long as you pretend then these tryout problems should not be that big of a deal. Everyone knows you can't pick the 'best 20' from 165 high schools. You have to assume these coaches do the best they can. I am sure I could pick a very good squad, I am sure you could too. But we didn't earn the privlege to coach the team, these other guys did. Until you are ready or qualified to spend every evening on the ball field coaching high school athletics then respect their choices and move on!
Any time you go to these short try out type events the coaches have a very limited time to make their evaluation of you. JUST MAYBE your guy had what I call a neutral showing. He didn't do any thing bad. but he didn't do anything impressive either.
Believe me if your guy plays college baseball he will have run into the same thing. Ditto for pro ball also. If you have confidence in your ability and it is built on true accomplishments not hype, then these type things are just a bump in the road.

It may be well said, but I take issue with much that was said...starting from this first sentence. I haven't found anyone on here pretending anything. Most of the members that I know on this board are current or past coaches at the HS and college level, former pro players, scouts, current players and their parents...I don't believe they are pretending anything and to imply otherwise is insulting their experience, knowledge and care.

People use this forum to express their opinions...whether we like their opinion or not, they are entitled to express it as long as it is not attacking one personally.

Obviously, a player that is invited to tryout for the state games is going to be excited. For him to feel that he did not get a fair or equal opportunity to compete would be very disappointing to the player and his parents....so I certainly understand their feelings when posting their opinion.

...and to think there are no bias in the selection process is naiive. To think that Chad Flack could have a bad day at tryouts and this would prevent him from being selected...that ain't going to happen.

I don't have a son participating in the senior games, so I don't have a dog in this fight, but the coaches chose to do this and as a coach they are responsible for teaching integrity and fairness. If this is what is happening...then great, good job. If not, then it ain't right and should be pointed out.

I agree with SS05's last comment...it's just a bump in the road...but to the players trying out that don't make it...if you were given a chance to compete then no problem, but if not...that bump sure will hurt for awhile and another life lesson learned.

Whoah, don't see why were trying to knock on Chris Taylor here. I played ball with him over the summer and fall and let me tell you he is the best high school catcher I've ever seen. Extremely strong arm, blocks well, calls a good game, controls a team, and has one of the best bats around. I've seen his arm shut down teams from stealing (this includes teams suc as Baseball America who have the best baserunners in the country). And yes Taylor was the best catcher at the tryouts...period.
