Do most HS programs get fired up around the third week of Jan.? When/if they do have work-outs are they working on fundamentals (bunting, sliding, play execution)? What about supporting year-round ball and facilitating the players with gym, weight room, hitting, pitching/catching time in the so called off season!? I'm very curious!!!

At our school they have a class that provides the athletes weight training and when it is not dead period 8 girls at a time work out on softball fundamentals during off season. Travel ball here has not been huge but some have taken advantage of that over the years mostly by assembling local team and competing. If you don't have a coach that can work with you year round encourage the girls to work on their own in pairs or a dedicated parent. Travel ball is still where its at to take your game to the next level and meet alot of people that can steer you in the right direction. I will say if you sit from May to Jan. you want get optimum ability until half the season is gone and that is too late. I am still a rookie at this but I am sure CF will have your complete hs "how to be ready" when he gets on here. Appreciate the post goducks!

Welcome to TBR goducks. ( I just caught the movie on cable this week)
    In answer to your question.
Tryouts can start on the monday after the 5th of Feb I belive. But We can have conditioning with any number of girls now, but workouts with no more then eight. There are also a few times during the year when we can not work with any player or even coach a team that has any girl that attends the school we coach at regardless if she has yet to tryout for the school team. I hope that answers some of your questions. and that is for NC schools. I have no idea about SC school rules.

Our DD is a very serious player. She is a good student, pitches year-round, goes to a trainer weekly, weight training 3x per week and hates to loose! She is described as extremely driven/serious. She is very frustrated playing with girls who haven't picked up a softball since last school season. The work-outs make her crazy with basically standing around, goofing off and only basic hitting and fielding. The catchers rarely even stay and catch for the pitchers afterwards! The reason I started this thread was to get a picture of what happends in other schools in the state.

Unless you have a coach that can provide a disciplined team this is what you will have to deal with. Some coaches tend to think just as we have fun that is all that matters. You will need to get a serious travel team or if your DD is not to attached "move". Hope things get better for you! Good luck this season! And tell your DD all she can do is be the example can't make others follow it!

    Serious

Many HS coaches are doing the job to make a few extra dollars and do not take the time to learn the game or to pick up the skills to run good practices. Others want to do right but feel they show weakness if they ask a parent or other individual for some advise. Girls that play ball year round are frustrated as many times they take private lessons, observe colleges in action, and deal with summer coaches who study the game and seek advise of each other during the travel schedule and then have a HS coach tell them to do things totally different. Myers Park HS for instance does not have a softball coach yet and practice starts in less than a month. Other schools have to get someone to volunteer to take the job. HS softball is still through all of these examples very strong at many schools. Maybe your school just happens to be a place where most girls do not play except HS. Butler, Providence, Independence, and other have kids that play travel ball and come into practice ready to play. Of course there are many other schools in and around Charlotte the same way Central, West Rowan, North Meck, Hopewell, etc. Hang in there get your DD on a good travel team and if she wants to play college ball the travel team will get her the most exposure. Coaches tend to go where they can see the most recruitable kids at one time and unless it is the HS States they are not coming to the HS Games. Good luck to U and your DD, fastpitch softball is exciting.

Thanks coach, what you have just stated has had me worried for some time.My DD will be a freshman next year, will not say what school. She's a very good pitcher for her travel team( her team won NSA State A class in 12u last year). Her HS coach does not impress me very much,so I was concerned about scouts seeing her. Her pitching coach has already informed me to keep her stats myself, while in school. It only makes sense that the scouts would be at showcases, since the better girls play travel ball.I know in middle school ball she was bored to death, & wanted to quit, but I told her , if she planned to play HS, she needed to stick it out.She did, but I felt sorry for her.Anyway thanks for peace of mind.
    GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
