The SWFH3A conference only gets 2 playoff bids in baseball this year which means a good baseball team is going to have sit at home during the playoffs. Their excuse was that there have been some new schools open in the East so they need the playoff spots. It seems to me that if we are going to water down the football playoffs by splitting the classifications "for the kids", then it is time to do it for all sports. This is certainly true next year when there will be so many split conferences.

Hey NCHSAA, step to the plate and show that you are truely about the kids and not the almighty dollar.

I first pointed this out several months ago when the 2005 playoff bracket was released by the NCHSAA. The Big South got the third playoff spot originally designated for the SWF 3A when Berry was added to the Big South. The coaches of the SWF 3A complained to the NCHSAA, but were told that statistics determined that the 3rd spot would be reassigned to the Big South, with 8 members, rather than the SWF with 3 spots. During the 4 year period since reallignment, the SWF 3A has had 3 representatives make the playoffs in baseball only once.

As a result, only 2 members of the SWF 3A, that includes Crest (Western runner-up in 2004 after beating TC Roberson and currently leads the conference standings), Burns (that lost 5-4 in 2004 playoffs to TC Roberson and just beat Charlotte Christian), Hickory, Kings Mountain (which just beat #1 South Meck) and RS Central will make the 2005 playoffs. Additionally, both Burns and Kings Mountain have already defeated the top team in the Big South, Ashbrook, this spring. Several darn good teams, with probably 16 to 18 wins will not be playing when the playoffs begin.

Any questions what conference is the toughest in NC when it comes to making the playoffs?

    :agreed:
I was talking with a guy from the paper that mentioned the schools in the East being the reason for only 2 this year.

Ask any of the coaches in the SWF for the facts. This situation was debated with the NCHSAA in January. Since Berry was added to the Big South, the Big South has 8 teams vs the SWF's 7 teams. The NCHSAA took the 3rd baseball playoff spot from the SWF and reassigned that spot to the Big South. No other factors influenced the move.

Another question. What's the harm of moving to 48 playoff teams in baseball, like soccer. Then quality teams in conferences like the SWF are not unfairly harmed.

This is the same thing as between the NPC and the SPC. A couple years ago, when both conferences had 7 schools, the "third" playoff seed bounced back and forth between the two conferences in alternating years. However, once Lake Norman joined the NPC, the NPC gets three playoff spots for the 8 teams, while the SPC recieves 2 bids for its 7 teams.

The Big East only gets 2 teams into the playoffs.Someone is going to get left at home out of New Bern,Rose, and Conley. The rest of the Big East isn't doing too bad either.Rocky Mount is 10-1,Havelock is 5-5,and Northern Nash is 7-4.

Baseball doen't get the numnber of playoff spots, because it doesn't make money for the NCHSAA like Football and Basketball. BTW... What is the real value of making the playoffs for those sports anyway when teams with losing records make the playoffs. Doesn't that make the baseball playoffs have more REAL value???

Tell that to teams that win 16 to 17 games and don't make the playoffs. That's a very likely situation in the SWF as well as other conferences this year.

I would suggest that soccer brings in little if any more money than baseball, but the NCHSAA seems to see fit to give soccer 48 playoff spots.
