now the question for SC is whether to try and save bumgarner for the championship or pitch him against a good East Rutheford team and secure them a spot in the championship, itll be interesting to see how that plays out

Shelby holds down Burns in tourney opener

Riding a four-game losing streak, Shelby took the field Monday night at its home park in search of a little offense.

The Golden Lions found a little hitting to compliment some solid pitching and quality defense in a 6-4 win over Burns in the nightcap of the first day of the Shelby Savings Bank Easter Tournament.

    Records: Shelby 7-10, Burns 9-7

What’s next: Both teams face Charlotte Christian next in pool play. Burns plays them tonight at 7 and Shelby gets them Wednesday at 4.

Familiar foes: Shelby owns a 2-1 series lead over the Bulldogs with Monday’s win. The two teams will meet again on April 25.

Turning point: After Burns cut the Shelby lead to 4-2, the Golden Lions started the sixth inning with a walk and a hit batsman. Brett Wease drove in Ben Huff with a groundout and Seth Canipe chased Tucker Craig home with an RBI single. That pushed the lead back to four runs and eventually provided the winning margin.

Silent bats: Burns managed only four hits on the night. Dating back to last Thursday, the Bulldogs have only nine hits in their last two games.

Darryl delivers: Shelby’s Darryl Montgomery started and got the win, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10. Canipe worked two thirds of an inning and Dustin Reeves worked the seventh for the save.

Casey Metcalfe started and took the loss for Burns, surrendering three runs on four hits in his two-plus innings of work. Jordan Lattimore went the rest of the way for Burns, giving up three runs — two earned — on three hits in five innings.

Offensive honors: Wease drove in two runs, Garrett Alexander was 2-for-4 and Craig was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

Shane Richard doubled and drove in two runs and Derek Shaffer doubled in a run for the Bulldogs.

Coaches comments: “Our pitching and our defense hasn’t been costing us games. We just haven’t been hitting. We came in here tonight wanting to swing it. Just go up there and swing the bats, trying to build some momentum for the last round (of conference play).” — Shelby head coach Tommy Wease

“Anytime you put the uniform on, you want to come out and play your best. I just feel like we didn’t come ready to play. We made a lot of mistakes in the field and did a lot of little things wrong. You can’t do that this time of year. We ought to be past those mistakes this time of year. We’ve just got to keep working hard this week and try to get better.” — Burns head coach Chris Emery

Capps’ commentary: Baseball is as complicated as you want it to be. Really, being successful in high school baseball often boils down to the simple things, like fielding, pitching and timely hitting. Shelby did all those things well, and that made all the difference.

    South Caldwell 10, Crest 0,

    5 innings

Brad Hardee was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double as South Caldwell blanked Crest, 10-0, in five innings in the opening game of the Shelby Savings Bank Easter Tournament.

Jimmy Messer (4-0) got the win for the Spartans (18-0), allowing two hits and striking out six in a complete-game effort.

Dustin Yarbro took the loss for the Chargers (5-12), pitching all five innings.

Madison Bumgarner was 2-for-3 with a double and Shane Clawson was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for South Caldwell, the top-rated team in this week’s Impact Baseball 4A poll.

Stefin Bridges and Dusty Quattlebaum had hits for Crest, who faces East Rutherford today at 4 p.m.

The Spartans will square off with East Rutherford Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    Easter Tournament update
    Alan Ford
    Sports Editor

There’s an old baseball cliche that jokingly says “good pitching stops good hitting and vice versa!”

Tuesday at Shelby’s Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium there was no denying which side of the coin ruled the day in the 2006 Shelby Savings Bank Easter Tournament. East Rutherford blanked Crest, 4-0, and Charlotte Christian shut down Burns, 6-2, on the second day of pool play.

    Game one

East Rutherford got a three-hit shutout by Blake Bostic, who out-dueled Crest right-hander Jordan Robinson, 4-0.

Robinson surrendered only six hits and allowed just three earned runs in six innings of work for the Chargers (5-13).

Bostic struck out five and allowed only one walk. Robinson, who stroke out only two before giving way to Kyle Kendrick in the seventh, used his defense effectively, getting 11 groundball outs.

At the plate: Zeke Blanton led the hitting for East (15-2) with two hits. Crest had one apiece from Robinson, Dustin Yarboro and Kyle Kendrick.

    Game two

Charlotte Christian (18-5) has five college signees on its roster and 6-7, 230-pound right-hander Bryant Gaines had a complete-game five-hitter against Burns (9-8). Gaines struck out nine and issued two walks.

At the plate: Burns got doubles by Shane Richard and Derek Shaffer among its production but could only punch across unearned runs in the second and seventh.

The Knights had nine hits led by two each from Max Fulginti, Kyle Kirkpatrick and Mason McVerry. Kirkpatrick had a two-run blast in the fifth inning.

What’s next: Charlotte Christian plays Shelby at 4 p.m. today South Caldwell faces East Rutherford in the 7 o’clock nightcap.
