Didn't want to hijack Gman's "money" thread.

Let's look at some facts regarding money from another angle. I went and looked at all the DI schools that offer softball teams. Of the 12 DI softball schools in the state of NC listed (look around but they are listed here: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?key=/ncaa/ncaa/sports+and+championship/softball ),

93 girls spread out over 12 team the last 4 years (FR-SR) were from somewhere in NC. If you divide those lucky 93 girls by the number of schools sponsoring DI teams that gives you 8 girls per team (rounded off for argument sake). Divide the 8 girls per team by 4 (FR-SO-JR-SR), that means over the last four years of teams currently rostered for 2010 season, on average 2 lucky girls a year got to play ball at the DI level at home. Two. Out of how many high school senior girls state wide playing softball?

So with 11.5 scolarships available at the DI level and counting the number of rostered players at each school (on average 18 rostered players) two lucky girls a year over the last four years got possibly half an athletic scholarship.

At the DII level it's 7 (?) scholarships per team. DIII it's all academic so you better have your grades up.

I guess my point being is that with the numbers on paper going into the 2010 season, if I were a kid looking to play college ball I'd make darn sure my number one goal was grades, because the odds are unless you play out of state where your family can not get to your games you'll be playing DII or DIII with MORE academic money than anything else.

Just to add to Gman's thread, out of state students pay higher tuition, but if a DD gets more academic money to cover the higher cost that's more money for the school.

    Choosing to play out-of-state

No question grades should always be first. Your numbers are absolutely on target but remember there are always NC girls who have in-state D1 offers but choose offers from out-of-state schools. There are actually more D1 opportunities than the in-state numbers suggest.

From my perspective there are some really odd recruiting philosophies at some schools. If you're consistently successful with out-of-state recruits and are graduating kids that's one thing but if you're recruiting west coast kids and losing something's not quite right.

    Or . . .

93 NC kids currently on D1 in-state rosters. That means, on average, 24 girls per year are joining in-state D1 teams. This does not include the girls who join out-of-state teams. If we estimate that number at 4 to 6 per year that means around 30 girls per year are D1 players. Can anyone here honestly argue that the state is producing more D1 level players?

The numbers are actually less, but your numbers are close. Average girls staying home to play for In-State (NC) DI schools average 2 per DI school. That's on average 24 girls a year, or 30 if you're number including DD's who go to play Out-Of-State as you estimate. In reality that's enough girls to field 2 really good high level 18U TB teams from NC, per year. Just keep those grades up! Good luck ladies.

What I did was compile a list from all DI colleges in NC listed on the link I provided from the NCAA website. All had their 2010 rosters listed FR thru Sr. This is for NC schools only. So if the girls you stated are rostered on a college team in NC for 2010 this would include them. Unless someone has kept a list of DI girls going out of state you'll need to turn over quite a few rocks to get that info. So for argument sake I just limited my list to players staying IN STATE so parents could get to their games.

I did look at a few of the schools listed for DII and DIII. 22 schools listed for DII, and 6 for DIII. For some reason Coastal Carolina is not listed but I know they have a team, unless they stopped sponsoring a team.

Add the DII and DIII schools and you are looking at about 10 more girls per team per year, on average. Add the DI girls and you have a total of about 12 girls scatterd over DI, DII, DIII per year, PER TEAM, going to IN STATE college teams to play ball. I think I counted 40 college teams total. So roughly 500 girls per year total at IN STATE schools.

Keep in mind that of those 500 girls only about 24 per year get D1 Athletic money. Half an athletic scholarship? At the DII level maybe a third. DIII is all grades. So when someone says to you my DD is getting a scholarship to play ball, how much is she really getting?

This is why I posted. Show us the money. Those of you who have been there....help us out. How much do kids really get? Give those coiming up a good idea of what they will be facing. Hope this helps.
