Would like to hear from those that know exactly what the college scouts(coaches) want to see represented as a profile. I have one for my DD and I have been complimented on it (I used example from another player) but I wouldn't know for sure if the coach got enough or too much info. I hear constantly from parents on how to prepare a proper profile and I am definitely not the expert. So lets hear it from those that are knowledgable on this subject. Since it is the beginning of showcase season.

    Effective Prospect Profile

This is a great topic. Thanks for bringing it up for discussion. Parents often make the mistake of thinking that college coaches want to know everything about their kid, so they send a two-inch-thick scrapbook including newspaper articles, pictures and stats from the time the kid was in the fifth grade. This is a waste of time. Coaches simply do not have the time to read it. In fact, this approach may cause more harm than good to a prospect's chances.

From my experience, college coaches want to cut to the chase pretty quickly. They want vital information to evaluate the prospect. The less cumbersome, the better.

A college coach's main priority is to keep his or her job. That is most often accomplished by recruiting the very best student-athlete available to them, so they will give a cursory look at practically any name that crosses their desk. However, in the end, a coach needs good, accurate info from a reliable source. Then, if the kid meets the initial "cut", the parents should have a good quality videotape available to send upon request.

In my almost daily discussions with college coaches, I've found that the following information provides good, clear data for them to go on:

    Personal Information
    Name
    Graduation Date
    Height
    Weight
    Speed/Jump/Strength, etc.
    Dominant Hand/Foot or Bats/Throws
    Clearinghouse Registration
    Video Available Y/N
    Parents Names
    Home Phone
    E-mail Address

    Academic Information
    High School and Phone
High School Coach's Name and Phone
    Enrollment
    Class Rank
    GPA (unweighted)
    SAT or ACT
    College Major (anticipated)
    Academic Honors

    Athletic Information
High School and/or Travel Team Coach's Evaluation
High School Statistics by Year (most recent listed first)
A List of Athletic Strengths (i.e., leadership, speed, etc.)
    Travel Team Statistics by Year
    Other Sports Played

    Character References
Provide the names and phone numbers of three non-family acqaintances as character references.
