There really isn't many options in this case. It's a shame and speaks volumes about the character of the coach, but the one alternative may be in transferring (assuming you can do that legally.)

You can't discuss this with the coach without coming across in a negative way. It will only hurt your son. The other option is for your son to continue to compete. It's a tough life lesson, but things tend to work out with a positive ending to those that work hard and keep a positive attitude.

Also, I would monitor your comments to your son. It's easy for him to pick up all the negative comments from others in regard to this situation, and let it affect him. That would be the worst outcome.

There is nothing you can do about the helicopter parent...and it appears the coach is oblivious to it; just keep quiet, be a positive influence, continue to encourage improvement and you'll see.....your son will be a better player....and man. No matter what, at some point, he will get his opportunity. Just make sure he is ready!

The one thing I want to stress...YOU CAN'T GET INVOLVED! It must be handled by your son.
