    Pickup Baseball?

No girls don't play 'pickup softball' but how often do boys play pickup baseball? For that matter, except for inner city kids playing basketball, how many kids play pickup anything? I think that's another issue.

I'm talking about the choices girls (and families) who do play rec ball and CAN afford 'travel' sports are making. And I really have shouldn't have listed the cities but rather the 'burbs' around them, Mecklenburg, Wake, New Hanover, Cumberland, Forsyth, Guilford . . . why aren't schools from these counties (with one exception I think, FV) playing at the creek today.

You can't judge Mecklenburg County on one year alone. They have been very well represented over the last 10 years. If you add in Cabarrus County, this area would be deemed to have been dominant over the last 10 years.

The sport is not dying in this area.

Interesting discussion. After having spoken with a large tournament director down east (travel ball 8U - HS) I think travel ball is fine and dandy. He stated that travel ball interest, and number of teams per tournament, continue to increase during the last 3 years (even in a horrible economy).

Personally, I find it harder and harder to find a quality pitching coach who is not swamped with new students of the game. I do believe that travel ball interest has caused a decline in the "wreck ball" leagues though. I hope there will always be a place for girls who are not TB quality to continue to enjoy this wonderful game. I know that the Apex park and "wreck" league is doing well.
