I have a friend that has a 10 year old daughter that recently suffered a concussion. Its gonna be awhile before she is cleared by doctors to play. I have seen MLB players that have worn helmets to protect them from further concussions. Is there any softball helmets to protect from further head injuries? Thanks in advance for any help

    Helmets don't prevent all concussions.

While they certainly help avoid the severity of the blow to the head, they protect the skull better than they protect the brain. They don't prevent the leading cause of concussion which is a "jerking" of the head in an opposite direction than it was going. Think of your brain like an egg yolk and the egg white is the surrounding matter within the skull. The force of the body going in one direction and abruptly going in another direction or stopping is what causes the concussion. Even with a helmet on, the brain will get jostled. A helmet isn't going to take away the force of the blow, it just protects the skull.

I hope these parents are overly cautious and opt to have her sit out for a very long time. In the whole scheme of things, sitting out as a 10 year old is nothing compared to what could happen if she plays and gets hit before she's completely healed.
