    non teacher jv coach

I am a sales manager who just happened to get asked to coach the Piedmont (monroe....or "monkey row" if you watch city council and county boards in action :) ) JV team.

Going into my 5th year this coming. I could never get the varsity job as you have to have a teaching certificate to hold the varsity job in a sport.

I can be an asst on varsity, but thankfully our varsity coach is qualified and does in fact care about the girls. I have a rising freshman there and get to coach her on next years jv team, very excited about that.....she has looked forward to that since i took the job originally.

lots of fun, i get paid $1000 which i give my assistants $$ for helping....also spend some of it on projects around the SB field each year....i have ruined 4 pairs of pants and a coat painting around the dugouts....wouldn't trade it for anything, its about the pride......:yoyo:

Amen...thank you for what you do jfagala

Someone mentioned that it is tough to find a quality coach because it is a non-revenue sport....but volleyball seems to have a lot of success with finding the right coaches and of course, baseball has coaches lining up waiting for a job opening

oh yeah, my pay has gone for pitching machines, balls, bats, catching equipment, shoes for girls that cant afford it, etc. I enjoy the heck out of it, and would gladly do it for free (wait, i am doing it for free - havent spent a penny on myself). I started doing this because the coach didnt know how to call pitches, but now that my dd has graduated, I believe I'll stick around and enjoy it a little longer.

    Possible Solution?

With all the TB Coaches and many HS teams built around these TB Teams or visa versa, why not ask the TB coaches for their help. Most of us are willing, some of us are tallented and what else are we going to do? Probably second guess the HS coaches every decision! If nothing else, all HS teams with a large percentage of TB players should work together for the benefit of the players and each team. Just a thought, Guess I still can not watch a game from the stands!:dead-hors

From both stand points. Before when I was an assistant coach at a high school and not a teacher. Very, very tough to actually know what your athletes are doing everyday in school. Are they at school? Did they get in trouble? All sorts of questions that you have no idea about, that will effect your game if your starting pitcher has been suspended.

I agree that there are a lot of coaches that shouldn't be there. If your doing it for the money your crazy. The PAY sucks. Administrators want teachers out there that know what these kids are doing all day long. Basically, if it's not football or baseball, who cares? For most schools that's still their top priority.

This is a no win situation.

Ask yourself this question, "Would you rather have your dd getting a great education or a great softball career?"

good point Coach, I will take the education as this produced 15,000 of the 18,000 needed to go to the college of my daughters choice. From all that I can find out, with the exception of two players from cleveland and gaston county, the average scholarship seems to be 3000 for the players who signed. just a little info, thats all

    Both

Anyone with determination, brains and tallent can get both! The key is determination. As for me and mine it's has not and will never be about money, only the love of the game and the desire to compete. Beyond all that an education will be paramount!

WoW! Some things never surprise me.

That's what's wrong with today's kids............EDUCATION should be number one priority.

If they aren't getting that from their parents, then something is really, really WRONG!!

As I said before I have been in both positions. Also, as a future administrator...........it's better to keep your coaches in house.

If you don't like how that coach is coaching, go volunteer. We have a parent that does that and he does a super job. B/c our JV coach was one of those coaches that didn't know much or even really care. This parent helped a ton with those girls. However, he has been offered the job, and doesn't want it, because he believes that it should be someone that is in contact with all the girls all day long. But he said he would be glad to continue to volunteer and not get paid a dime.

He also approaches the coach in a suttle way, and does not try to come in and take over the team. Which I have seen other volunteers try to do. There's a proper way of approaching a coach that doesn't know what their doing and an improper way.
