Coach, I loved your post...but this paragraph was the most profound. March to May is glory time. But June to February is the bedrock of success. I've rarely seen a complaining Parent who grasped the REAL meaning of off-season. My son is 22 & still hasn't seen DisneyWorld.

    Sophomore year

If the team concept is too difficult or emotionally painful for parents to accept, then perhaps we should direct our child-athletes into sports such as golf, tennis, track and cross country. While our kids' scores help an overall total, at least in these sports, their accomplishments can be better publicized, glamorized and they will no longer be no names. If they don't become that superstar we KNOW they are, we have nobody to blame but ourselves for not providing better genes.

This is a helpful post. That's a good way to think about it. Thanks Coach.

School Ball is "glory time" the fun time. Should be. UK7Dook3 is right on.

What Coach27 said is dead on as usual for him. Many folks put a lot of stock in the JV/V playing time. It important but its not the whole enchilada. The bread & butter is the off season. (Why am talking about food? lol.)Thats where, IMO, players are made.
Hard work. (But QUALITY hard work). That work in the off season is what determines playing time during school ball. Well IMO if the player has done his part then it should show during school ball. (I know sometimes it doesn't work like that. The kid gets the pine anyway.)

Lots of players do not practice enough IMO. In the summer and fall if you are serious about playing ball then you will get after it. You will eat sleep and cry baseball.

How does it go? Don't worry. Someone out there is trying to out work you.

Unless there is a need for the Sophs to play a specific role then I think they need to stay on JV. But JV and V should ALWAYS practice together. Imagine a Sophomore getting a plate appearance to face Madison B. Now I bet that would open their eyes! If had coached him(Madison B.) I would have had all the Sophs on JV face him during practice. Id have Madison bring it! And bring it inside!
