This just doen't make sense to me, but here goes:

South Meck just had their fall baseball meeting today to discuss and inform the players about this seasons fall workout. The coach says, "because I am working with the football team, the work out sesssions will have to start at 6:30PM (yes, 6:30PM) each Tuesday and Wednesday evenings". Thanks alot!

Also, (I need some help with this one) he says, that not all the players will be allowed to participate in the workouts. You will be notified if you are invited!! Oh really, and just how do you get invited? Is this the way it is or am I missing something here?

I thought I heard that OnDeck was going to run the fall workouts for SM. Is this not correct? I don't have a dog in the fight here, just relaying what was told to me.

This is not unusual at all. Plus, working out under the lights is a good transition.

PhillieDave- because of the mandatory rule of no more than 8 players being coached at one time, they have to have a sytem of who is being invited. Usually, they mix up the position players throughout the week and have pitchers and catchers alternating other days. (although two days is not enough)

I can remember one year my son had HS baseball practice at 3...HS basketball practice at 5 and On Deck practice at 7:30. One of the reasons a kid chooses one sport to dedicate himself to

I play for the team and yes you are correct that its every tuesday and wednseday nights. Kids will be invited to the workouts thorugh email. there will be more than 8 people out there everyday though but coach J will have nothing to do with running the practice. He is just going to set up a plan in the dugout and me and the rest of the seniors are gona have to take charge and make sure everything is running smothley. We have been offered by many organizations to help with fall worrkouts but he has not decided which one to go with because he doesnt know anything about any of them. If you have any more questions about what is going on just ask me

    Thanks SMB21,

Will all the players participate at one time or another, or just how will they divide up the workouts with everyone. I was just concerned about some of the boys not being able to participate.

Under the light's does sound good Braves!

    Old Dad, new to SM!

    Be careful

you might want to ease up on your discussions about how you guys are running your fall workouts.

i have been wrong many times, but i'm pretty sure you cant have open facilities at the school. i can't leave a practice plan and leave the field unlocked for my kids to come and practice. it has mostly to do with liability issues, but i think the nchsaa has done away with open facilities. someone let me know, because if i'm wrong about this i'm unlocking the gate baby

    umm

yes when I read SMB21's post on this, I thought about the potential pitfalls and liabilities of leaving players in charge with no adult on-site supervision or oversight. just don't sound right.

The following is from the NCHSAA 2006-07 Handbook. As you read through it, you will see that “Open Facilities” are not prohibited, but must be monitored by school personnel.

Any student that meets eligibility requirements and has an interest in playing baseball for South Meck is welcome to the open facility sessions.

Coach Jurecka will be present as a monitor of the open facility. He is not going to instruct during these sessions, rather take a few days to evaluate prospective players. After several open sessions, Coach will invite specific players for skill development sessions. These sessions are by invitation only so that no more than the maximum allowed players will be present.

While these boards are fun and informative it would be much better for everyone involved that if you have specific questions like how do I get invited to a workout or other specific question about his program, that you talk directly with the coach. He is more than willing to make time in his busy schedule for such inquiries.

    120
Any team practice or game environment created in an OFF-SEASON
SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSION is prohibited during the 180 day school calendar.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS ARE ALLOWED, BUT SHALL NOT BE
HELD DURING ANY TRYOUT PERIOD OF AN IN-SEASON SPORT.
SESSIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED DURING THE FOLLOWING: from the start of fall sports practice to Sept. 1; from the start of winter sports practice to Dec. 1; from the start of spring sports practice to March 15.

SESSIONS ARE ALSO NOT ALLOWED DURING THE LAST FIVE STUDENT DAYS OF EACH SEMESTER. THE WEIGHT ROOM MUST
ALSO BE CLOSED DURING THE LAST FIVE STUDENT DAYS OF EACH SEMESTER.

All skill development sessions must be voluntary and open to all eligible students. AT NO TIME MAY A COACH REQUIRE OF ANY STUDENT OFF-SEASON SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS AS A MEASURE OF CONTINUED PARTICIPATION ON A TEAM. Any coach who promotes the idea that taking part in off-season practice is required is blatantly out of compliance with the intent and purpose of this rule.

A STUDENT MUST BE ELIGIBLE UNDER NCHSAA GUIDELINES TO TAKE PART IN OUT-OF-SEASON SESSIONS, AND THOSE INVOLVED IN OUT-OF SEASON SESSIONS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE NCHSAA CATASTROPHIC INSURANCE POLICY. Student insurance is strongly recommended for all those involved in athletics, in- season or out-of-season.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS ARE RESTRICTED IN THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS TO ONE LESS THAN A TEAM, ON A DAILY BASIS. THERE IS NO RESTRICTION ON THE NUMBER OF COACHES WHO MAY WORK WITH THE ATHLETES. In basketball only, multiple skill development sessions may be held in a day. Two 45-minute sessions are allowed in a single day for skill development (NONE during dead periods). Four players may be in one session and four different players in the other session. SEE BELOW: OFF-SEASON SKILL DEVELOPMENT WORKOUTS

SPORT NUMBER OF ATHLETES ON A GIVEN DAY
football .................... no more than 21 golf .............................no more than 3
basketball ................ no more than 4 softball .......................no more than 8
baseball .................... no more than 8 wrestling ...................no more than 7
volleyball ................. no more than 5 track ..........................no more than 6
tennis ....................... no more than 4 cross country .............no more than 4
soccer ....................... no more than 10 swimming .................no more than 6
lacrosse .................... no more than 9 field hockey ...............no more than 10

Open facility and skill development sessions may not be held on the same day. An organizational meeting for the purpose of discussing policies, academics, distributing physical forms and the like, or equipment issue prior to the opening date of practice is allowed, but no sports instruction would be permitted in that setting. Facilities may be used for out-of-season athletic play on a strictly voluntary basis, open to all students and required of none. For safety purposes, school administrators or other school personnel should be present as supervisors of this free play. While facilities are being used for out of-season play, they may not be used for individual skill development sessions. Any individual, who coaches at an NCHSAA member high school, head or assistant, paid or non-paid, faculty or non-faculty, parent volunteer, etc., must abide by the skill development, out-of-season workout rules. If a high school coach, regardless of the sport he or she coaches at the high school, also coaches an “outside” or “club” team, whether

    121
head or assistant, and has any athletes from the high school on that outside team, he cannot work with any of them during a dead period, and is limited to no more than the sport-specified limit of them per day in an out-of-season workout. During the summer, coaches are free to work with individual or multiple players, from their school or their feeder schools, conduct practices, etc. On August 1, the fall sports season begins and those restrictions are in place. Note that the sports in season should always take precedence for facility use, etc., over those not in season, in keeping with the philosophy of the sports season concept. Coaches coaching a team outside the sports season but during the school year (basketball, soccer, etc) must still abide by the numbers restrictions above (one less than a team). Exception: baseball/softball (Legion baseball etc) which extends into the summer.

Do away with the gate and the kids can use the field to practice on their own anytime they wish.
