    Pioneers Split Series against Redbirds

Pioneers split yet another double header as they traveled away against the Asheville Redbirds. In game one, they stormed their way to the top as they dominated 11-2 with only 8 hits through seven innings.
Off to a slow start, Anthony Dimino battled for the first hit of the game in the third inning. Diego Perez and Tony Brandner both managed to cross home plate putting the Pioneers at a 2-0 lead at the end of three.
The fourth managed to be a grand slamming inning for Diego Perez as he jacked an absolute bomb scoring Brett Thompson, David Daniels, and Brandon Wilt, putting the Pioneers ahead now 6-0 at the end of 3½. Though the Redbirds battled back at the bottom of the inning scoring only one, it still wasn’t enough.
Yet another two run homer by Tony Brandner was smoked in the fifth, his first this season! Pioneers proceeded with a scoreless sixth inning, however the seventh and final inning truly shut it down.
With RBI singles by both Brett Thompson and David Daniels, Pioneers gained a 10-1 lead. Diego Perez with his successful at bats managed an RBI double to score one more. Redbirds scored one more at the end of seven however the final score stayed: 11-2.
Paul Stelling pitched a beautiful 6+ innings for the Pioneers as he allowed 6 hits, 2 runs, only 2 walks and 4 strike outs. Kevin Joo closed in the seventh allowing no runs and no hits. Redbird’s pitcher Tyler Wilson suffered the loss as he surrendered only 2 hits but 7 walks.
Game two proved to be a struggle as the Pioneers suffered a 0-5 loss to the Redbirds in seven innings. With only two hits the entire game by Dimino and Thompson, the Pioneers weren’t going to be able to come out on top this time.
The Redbirds, however, managed seven hits and five runs ultimately putting them ahead of the Pioneers. As Harrison Hood suffered the loss after pitching 4+ innings, Ryan McClintock was able to come in in relief and end the game. Redbirds pitcher Will Carter earned the win in game two allowing two hits, no runs, six walks, and four strike outs.
The Pioneers will play on home turf Monday, July 2 at 7pm against the Carolina Chaos.

    Win Against Carolina Chaos

Pioneers took a huge lead late in the game against the Carolina Chaos winning the game 13-6. The Chaos and Pioneers were neck and neck with a 3-2 score through the seventh and the Pioneers took the lead to end it in the ninth.
Early on, David Daniels and Matthew Pelt managed earned runs in the first and second. Pioneers were slow to swing until the seventh when they earned a seven run lead.
After consecutive walks in the seventh, Stefan Jordan and then Adam Venditti score. With a double by Daniels to center and an over throw to third by Redbirds’ center fielder, Thompson, Wilt, and Brandner all manage to cross home plate. On a dropped third strike, Matthew Pelt manages to reach first as David Daniels scores to put Pioneers at a 8-3 lead. After a single to left by Stefan Jordan, and a 2 RBI double by Adam Venditti, Pioneers lead 10-3 in the seventh.
Although Redbirds battled back to score 2 more in the eighth, Pioneers, too, had a successful inning. Singles from both Thompson and Pelt led to scoring runs by Brandner, Thompson, and Perez putting the Pioneers ahead 13-5 at the end of eight.
After the Redbirds scored one run in the ninth, Pioneers managed a 13-6 win. Pioneers’ pitcher Taylor Thurber battled through 5 innings, however, Tyler Smith received the win after coming in in the sixth. Michael Curet saw some playing time but ultimately Taylor Cook earned the save. Redbirds pitcher, Mike Skelly, suffered the loss allowing four runs on no hits with three walks.
The Pioneers will travel to Morganton to play the Morganton Aggies on Wednesday, July 4th at 7pm.

    Brutal Loss vs. Aggies

Morganton, NC- Pioneers suffered a brutal loss to the Morganton Aggies with a 14-1 defeat. The Pineville Pioneers just were not on their A game this fourth of July as they scored only one run in the entire 9 innings against the Aggies.
As they traveled to Freedom High School, the Pioneers scored one in the top of the first. Brett Thompson started off the game with a home run as the very first batter. Unfortunately, that was as far as the Pioneers got. Totaling only four hits throughout all nine innings, two from David Daniels and one from Anthony Dimino, the Pioneers surrendered to the Aggies far too early.
Caleb Henley, pitching 1.2 innings, earned the loss giving up six runs on two hits with eight walks early in the second. Kevin Joo, pitching in relief for a total of 2.2 innings, surrendered four more runs on four hits and six walks. Unfortunately, the Pioneers weren’t out of the game yet. Taylor Cook entered the game giving up four more runs on five hits and only one walk. Ryan McClintock, pitching one inning, surrendered one hit but no runs. Aggies pitcher, Justin Johnson, pitched six innings giving up only four hits and one run.
Pioneers will try to battle back as they travel to Lake Norman on Friday, July 6th for a double header at 5pm.

    Ballentyne Smokies

Game 1 - The Ballantyne Smokies top the Morganton Aggies 5-4.

The Morganton Aggies (15-11) came out firing, but couldn't hang on to the lead, ending up on the losing side of a 5-4 ballgame against the Ballantyne Smokies (17-9) on Thursday at Ardrey Kell. While the Morganton Aggies led until the sixth inning, the Ballantyne Smokies worked their way back and took the lead on an RBI single by Cody Blood.

Brandon Harris racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Ballantyne Smokies. He homered in the first inning and singled in the third inning.

The Morganton Aggies couldn't get anything going so long as Blake Parsley was on the hill. Parsley held the Morganton Aggies hitless over 2 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out two. Andy Capone recorded his first win of the year for the Ballantyne Smokies. Capone struck out one, walked one and gave up one hit. Ronn Bidwell was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings, walked two, struck out none, and allowed two runs.

Game 2 - The Morganton Aggies (16-11) beat the Ballantyne Smokies (17-10) 11-3 in seven innings on Thursday at Ardrey Kell HS after an eight-run explosion in the seventh inning.

Russel Michalec pushed the Morganton Aggies ahead, in the seventh inning, and the lead lasted until the final out. Ross Easterling to start the seventh. He then went from second to third on a single by Blake Bays. Finally, Michalec came to the plate with the score tied at three, and was hit by a pitch, bringing home Easterling.

Jeremy Coburn got the win, running his season record to 1-3. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered one hit. Grant Fisher ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his second loss of the year. He allowed eight runs in one-third of an inning, walked three and struck out none.

The Smokies host the Statesville Owls Friday at Ardrey Kell for a DH starting at 5:00. They turn around and host the Carolina Chaos Saturday in another DH starting also at 5:00. By the end of the week, the Smokies will have played 8 games in 6 days.

Tough night for the Smokies as they drop two well played ballgames. Statesville first baseman Jace Whitley goes 3-4 with a 7th inning game winning homerun to win the first game 4-3. In the second the Smokies were held hitless until Brandon Harris blasts his 12th homerun of the year in the 6th. Statesville was very solid and swung the bats well tonight winning the second game 5-1. Smokies are at home tomorrow for a double header with the Chaos.

    Chaos @ Smokies

The Ballantyne Smokies and the Carolina Choas split a double header Saturday night.

The Chaos came out swinging the bats to the tune of 17 hits along with a few errors by the Smokies to take game one by a large margin. Chaos starter threw a gem as he held the Smokies to one run.

In game two the Smokies got a complete game from Lou Trosch which should have been a shutout. The first basemen dropped a routine pop fly in the top of 7 and on the next pitch, Hammond hit a homerun. The Smokies scored each inning and took game two by a score of 9-1.

After a long, 8 game week for some, the Smokies and Aggies are tied for first place in the league with Pineville only a half game out. Should be a fun race to the finish.
